Nice place ata reasonable price!
Very slow checkin... but very nice! One of the elevators was not working so it would sometimes take a while to get to your room. The lobby was nice and the rooms we ok.. a bit outdated but nice size rooms Air conditioning worked well. Breakfast buffet was very nice with great selections! Overall not a bad hotel for the price! Was great location for The concerts I was there to see!

Convenient, safe location with wonderful view
I took one of the rooms with the view of Pao de Acucar, and it was fantastic. Get up for sunrise and you can get some spectacular pictures. The location felt very safe and was convenient to the Catete station on Rio's Metro line. The staff were great, and all the features of the room (heater, plugs, lamps, TV, bathroom fixtures) worked great. In terms of comforts, it would be great if they used fitted sheets for their mattresses (with the elastic band) to hold them in place. They just used tucked sheets. Not a big deal, but odd. Would also be good to have a coffeemaker/electric tea kettle of some sort given that water in Brazil isn't potable. These are common in most other countries even in 2 to 3 star hotels.

Great stay, except for...
Wonderful staff and breakfast. Place is old but charming. That said, pillows are in desperate need of updating. Mine were reall flat and uncomfortable.

Worth a visit
Fantastic location right at the ocean, in a local community neighborhood with a good, popular beach just 100 yards away. Solid internet and very good free breakfast. Clean room and friendly staff. The fitness room is really just rusting scrap, so avoid that.

Excellent locaton and value
Stayed in this hotel in late October 2017. It is well located opposite the beach, and a relatively easy (and safe) walk to the Flamengo shopping area. The room was a little dated but quite comfortable, and the entry to the hotel is rather "old style" grand. Staff were very helpful and obliging.

Hotel stay around carnival period
I and 2 other friends stayed here during the carnival period. We were fairly pleased with the hotel as a whole, affordable, although the rooms were a little plain. We were hoping for a sea view room but had got a room with basically no view which was a little disappointing - they did offer to upgrade us at a cost which we felt was a bit too much at the time. As it was carnival period it was quite lively local to the area but it is in a fairly central location to the main beaches (approx. 10 min taxi ride to copacobana) and then downtown rio (which was preferable to us). Other services (check in/out, breakfast, room service etc.) offered by the hotel were good and staff were pleasant and friendly. The hotel could do with a swimming pool though! Generally we had a nice stay and didn’t come across any problems.

Well located but outdated
The hotel is very well located (especially if you want to go to Carnival parades of "Escolas de Samba", however despite the fact that there have been some changes made, they are not enough. The room still has old-fashioned wall units A/C. Small TVs and the bathrooms have been partially renovated (they still have old towel racks and old door knobs which are rusted. The bed (in my case a queen size) had a bump in the middle. Also, the towels are old.

25th anniversary trip!
Ending our 25th anniversary trip, we decided to book a nicer hotel! We loved our stay here. Here's a tip, visit the gym on the 12th floor for a great view of Christ the Redeemer at night!

Overall it was ok. The elevators need some re-conditioning as they seem kinda old. AC was quite noisy for a 4star hotel.

Friendly staff in a very old and run down hotel
The hotel is clean and the staff is nice but it is in serious need of upgrading. The bedding, furnishings and fixtures are very old and ratty, the light in the bathroom flickered and the place was just not comfortable. I think they may have been remodeling some of the rooms because a strong smell of paint thinner permeated my floor, but it may just have been the chemicals they use to clean.

Lovely people, lovely hotel.
The people of the hotel (and the whole city, in fact) COULD NOT HAVE BEEN NICER. The only reason for not giving all 5 stars was that there was no dedicated concierge, so if the desk was busy with check-ins, we had to wait for directions, etc.

Nice Balance of City and Beach
Loved the location...didn't want to just be at the beach but could walk to city and had Flamengo Beach just across the street. Very Central.

Nice for the price and close to Flamengo Beach
During its heyday this hotel was really nice. Now expect one of the four elevators to be out of service most of your stay. It is fine, not in bad shape, and for the amount of time you will likely be in the hotel, perfect. Our room was updated and comfy, bathroom looked great, shower pressure was awesome, and view was great. There are soccer courts right in front with big lights shining on them and probably into your room until the AM so definitely draw the curtains.

Good place. Clean, safe and convenient to everything. Very close to both metro Catete and Flamengo park/ beach area. Slightly down at the heels feel. Be prepared for slow elevators or take the stairs. Internet slow. But Novo Mundi is a classic old place with a good feel to it. Nice Jazz in the restaurant in the evenings. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Unpretentious. It's my go to place in Rio.

Horrible experience
Staff is courteous and friendly, but the facilities are horrible, serious need of remodeling. Unless you get a room on the 12th floor, which I had to complaint to be upgraded, you will get a outdated room with a heavy smell of mold, bad mattress and stained carpet.

Nice Hotel.
Well-priced, clean hotel. Nice bar with music just about every night. Common areas are a little dated. Upper floors with view of SugarLoaf are preferrable (and I think the most recently updated).

Nice location (business trip) and decent hotel, above average in the mid-price range in Rio de Janeiro. Windows are horrible at blocking street noise. Elevators (only 1 working) are the slowest in the state.

Terrible experience
This is the worst hotel I have stayed in. The hotel is under construction and filthy with a curious odor throughout. When we checked in we were put in a room with no ventilation looking onto a tiny shaft. We complained and they moved us to a "suite" on the 10th floor. This also smelled and the ac did not work. Truly an awful experience and I would advise giving this hotel a wide berth.

The hotel and staff were nice and courteous, and restaurant was good but not excellent. The main issue I had was that on the floor I was staying they were performing construction and due to the location of the wireless router I had absolutely no internet signal. In order to work I had to go to the lounge or bring my laptop out into the hallway. I requrested someone to come and try and resolve the issue but no one showed.

Great hotel but building works spoilt it
The hotel was obviously a nice hotel. The staff were nice and I could see Christ the redeemer and sugar loaf mountain from my window. However, the hotel has building work going on and the noise was so loud it was like the work was going on in my room. Very loud drilling and banging although not constantly all day. There was also water dripping from the bathroom ceiling. When the work is finished I would recommend this hotel to a friend as everything apart from the noise was good. If you were out early till late it would not bother you.

The hotel and location were good, nice to be away from the beaches (although we did spent a few nights in Ipanema to balance that out). Catete and Flamengo are super lively and fun. A lot of their rooms are being renovated and our room was right in the middle of a bunch of rooms that were being improved so there was a lot of noise, hammering, and some smells of burning. Other than that though, enjoyed the hotel.

The hotel is under renovation because of the World Cup and the Olympics. Try to get a room on a higher floor. Front office staff and doorman were very helpful. Beware of taxi drivers. Always have the doorman check to see if they know where you want to go otherwise you will be driving around for hours. For the most part they don't know where any of the restaurants are.

You can do better than this
My rating is purely based on the value of this hotel vs the price you pay. This hotel is just not worth more than $120 -$130 night in Rio. You can do much better for a $210 to $230 per night hotel. I have stayed at this hotel a few times but this was my last time. Consistent problems with the internet service on every single trip. Forget about skyping for hours at a time, the internet just does not have enough bandwidth in the mornings or early evenings when other guests are using the internet. Rooms are hit/miss. Some of the rooms have not been remodeled for 20+ years while some are much newer. Be prepared if you get an older room and plan on working on a computer. The built in desk is 6 inches taller than a normal desk so forget working on a computer for extended periods while sitting down. There are large football fields across the street from the hotel and games/noise can go on until 1am or later. Be prepared for this if your room faces east or south. The area around the hotel seems safe although I was not on the street walking around after 9:30pm. Day time is perfectly safe. I have found the staff to be helpful and have no complaints about them whatsoever. The problem is really that the hotel is really overpriced compared to other hotels in the area. Go stay by Copacabana and hop on the subway back to Rio Centro. Subway is fast, easy and safe from Copacabana to Rio Centro and you will be much happier with the hotels. You can do better.

Temperature control in shower was unpredictable, to say the least -- fluctuating between scalding and icy. Lots of street noise, even on the 9th floor (there are 2 soccer pitches just across the street from the hotel, resulting in hooting and hollering at all hours of the night and early morning). The restaurant was a bit overpriced and dinner was a generic Italian-style buffet. We would have liked something more Brazilian. On the positive side, front desk staff were courteous and spoke very good English, and the view of the ocean, beach and Sugarloaf from my room was SPECTACULAR (see photo). This being said, colleagues of mine were put in rooms that had no window at all, save for a frosted glass pane that overlooked an internal "courtyard". So the view is luck of the draw.

The hotel's location is great - just across the Museum of the Republic, walking distance from the local shopping district of Catete, a stone's throw away from Flamengo beach and a good view of the Sugar Loaf and a glimpse of Christ the Redeemer. The staff are very nice too, despite the limitations in English. All for a good price, by Rio standards!

Overall, - quite good, - clean and friendly staff, - however poor gym facilities, and quite dated hotel. No coffee or tea in room, etc, and internet connections very poor. Good price, however it was classed as a 4 star, and would expect much more from a 4 star. I would rate it at most 3 star, - however as a 3 star, reasonable value for money.

Novo Mundo a hotel in a very nice area of Rio
The hotel is beautiful located close to the former presidents palace. A five minutes walk to the subway station which can transport you to the places you want to see. Recommend subway instead of bus or taxi due to the way people drive in town. An excellent breakfast is included in your stay. A very friendly staff that speaks english very well. I can recommend this hotel.

Good Stay
The hotel is close to the metro to get to the very touristy area like ipanema. However, there's also a beach across the street - the location really is VERY good for the price. The room was clean and very spacious - great view of Sugar Loaf. The staff was friendly but the service was okay - I ordered dinner from room service that never arrived. The complimentary breakfast was good. Overall the hotel was very very good for the price. I would stay here again.

Has its problems
Even though it was a "Deluxe" room, comfort was minimal. Most problematic was the bathroom: you may not need a bathtub (there is none) but then at least you want there to be some little "ridge" on the floor that contains the spread of water. There was no such thing and as a result water from the shower would flood the entire bathroom. In addition, neither the seat nor the lid of the toilet would stay up. Using the toilet requires holding up the lid with one's back and elbows. Quite disgusting in my opinion.
