We lost our initial Europe travel plans due to the pandemic and we were lucky to come across this place last minute. What a gem!
The Virginia Dare Marina proved to be a fantastic home base for all activities that ease and feed the body, mind, and soul. We hiked, kayaked, fished, rented a boat, visited wineries, took in a great deal of history (e.g., D-Day Memorial, Bedford Boys), went on a cruise, cooked out, and enjoyed the peacefulness and sightseeing opportunities (e.g., alpaca farm, berry-picking, orchards, fresh farm-raised meats, dairy & veggies directly from the grower). Oh, and... the D-Day Memorial was jaw-dropping (and I say this being from the DC area)... a must see!
We stayed for 8 nights, without a solid plan for activities, and we easily found low-key or energetic adventures for each day. Most everything was nearby or within a 20 minute drive, though we did venture further (40 min) to the Peaks of Otter for a hike to the cascades and historic farm (easy-to-moderate hikes). If we had stayed longer, we would've liked to attempt the Sharp Top summit hike (strenuous). And I have to say, these drives were remarkable... Virginia is very beautiful.
But perhaps the best surprise was how welcoming everyone in the Virginia Dare Marina was... from the folks that run the cruise ship to those that work in the Portside Grill & Bar, to the neighbors, and also our hosts. They all went to great lengths to accommodate any request we had and they were down-to-earth and very friendly. It was truly home away from home with a bit of Southern comfort mixed in.... we felt accepted and included as part of their community.
In terms of suggestions from previous commenters, the wifi worked great for us, and although there is no outlet in the bathroom, I was able to easily fix my hair using the mirror and outlet in the main bedroom. Also, we never heard anything from the duplex neighbor, and we didn't receive any complaints on our noise level, which can sometimes be a bit rowdy when we're playing cards at night. ;)
Overall, our stay was outstanding. We would highly recommend this rental for its location and hospitality. In fact, the area is so rich with things to do that on our way back to the DC area, we stopped several times... to see caverns, Natural Bridge state park, not to mention Shenandoah National Park is also close by. Have fun! :D
