4/5 Good

Nice Property
Enjoyed our stay and the people. Located in the Virginia Dare Marina, walking to the bar/restaurant/boat was great. Property was well stocked. Any more than 3 people would be challenging as space is limited and only 2 can eat at the counter. Internet provided via MiFi. Great performance for 2 days, then we hit the plan limit and performance dropped off to unusable. With a Roku internet powered TV, this is problematic.

A quiet getaway
A great home base for other activities. We were expecting a cottage but it’s actually a duplex with a super nice quiet neighbor whom we only saw twice coming and going. The owners were responsive to our questions regarding the internet. At that point it was a Mi-Fi set up. I believe Internet was being added the following week. It is a clean charming although small set up. We used the bunk room as a dressing area and we were fine. There were only two of us and I can’t imagine any more adults being able to sit or fit in the house. The pictures are true to scale. The cruise was wonderful and the staff were delightful. A great way to see the lake. We were able to enjoy the local area. We rode our bikes on the Roanoke River Greenway, explores the Booker T Washington birthplace, hike the Peaks of Otter trails, golf at Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, Tour Jefferson’s Home. We also enjoyed the Smith Mtn Community Park as well as highly recommend the Smith Mtn Lake Dtate Park. We drove over to the Dam but due to COVID-19 were only able to walk some paved trails and not see the actual overlook. This is a nice basic stay. It’s clean and well located. We’d recommend it.

Something for the body, the mind, and the soul
We lost our initial Europe travel plans due to the pandemic and we were lucky to come across this place last minute. What a gem! The Virginia Dare Marina proved to be a fantastic home base for all activities that ease and feed the body, mind, and soul. We hiked, kayaked, fished, rented a boat, visited wineries, took in a great deal of history (e.g., D-Day Memorial, Bedford Boys), went on a cruise, cooked out, and enjoyed the peacefulness and sightseeing opportunities (e.g., alpaca farm, berry-picking, orchards, fresh farm-raised meats, dairy & veggies directly from the grower). Oh, and... the D-Day Memorial was jaw-dropping (and I say this being from the DC area)... a must see! We stayed for 8 nights, without a solid plan for activities, and we easily found low-key or energetic adventures for each day. Most everything was nearby or within a 20 minute drive, though we did venture further (40 min) to the Peaks of Otter for a hike to the cascades and historic farm (easy-to-moderate hikes). If we had stayed longer, we would've liked to attempt the Sharp Top summit hike (strenuous). And I have to say, these drives were remarkable... Virginia is very beautiful. But perhaps the best surprise was how welcoming everyone in the Virginia Dare Marina was... from the folks that run the cruise ship to those that work in the Portside Grill & Bar, to the neighbors, and also our hosts. They all went to great lengths to accommodate any request we had and they were down-to-earth and very friendly. It was truly home away from home with a bit of Southern comfort mixed in.... we felt accepted and included as part of their community. In terms of suggestions from previous commenters, the wifi worked great for us, and although there is no outlet in the bathroom, I was able to easily fix my hair using the mirror and outlet in the main bedroom. Also, we never heard anything from the duplex neighbor, and we didn't receive any complaints on our noise level, which can sometimes be a bit rowdy when we're playing cards at night. ;) Overall, our stay was outstanding. We would highly recommend this rental for its location and hospitality. In fact, the area is so rich with things to do that on our way back to the DC area, we stopped several times... to see caverns, Natural Bridge state park, not to mention Shenandoah National Park is also close by. Have fun! :D

3/5 Okay

Nice enough
First the positive: Good location near the State Park and only 7 min to “downtown” Moneta, and 10 min to Eastlake Food Lion. There is also a nice berry picking farm and two wineries nearby. The rental is a cute little place that has been recently redone. Huge positive is that it comes with a boat slip if you have one or are going to rent a boat/jet ski. There is also the Portside bar/grill right on premises, as well as the Virginia Dare boat tour. 2 tickets to the Virginia Dare and a gift certificate to the Portside came with the rental. Portside is a local hangout with typical bar food, but a very good Cuban sandwich we are told by our friends who have had it. We had the wings and the chicken sandwich which I would not recommend. We have Verizon cell phones and coverage was excellent here the entire stay. On the downside, I think we were the first VRBO renters and the place was not quite ready for rental. It was advertised as having WiFi, it does NOT have WiFi, so know that before you book if you need computer access or WiFi for kids. It is also advertised as a cozy cottage, but it is in fact a duplex with an adjoining long-term renter next door, so you are able to hear them at times and they can likely hear you. This isn’t bad if you go into it knowing that, but it isn’t how the listing was portrayed when we booked. There were several issues that we brought up to management and they were very accommodating with quickly addressing them. One other thing to know is that when we were there they didn’t have a power outlet in the bathroom, which meant using a hair dryer or razor needed to be done in another room without a mirror. Tons of potential in this little place and it could (and likely will) receive higher ratings once they work a couple kinks out.
