Stroll through the arboretum and manicured gardens of one of Europe’s largest botanical parks to see grand old trees, rare plants and tropical flora.

The Rombergpark Botanical Garden is a sprawling parkland encompassing 160 acres (65 hectares) of expertly tended gardens. Wander down meandering garden paths, explore the historic arboretum and admire exotic plants from around the world in the greenhouses. Established in 1822 as an estate for the Romberg family’s castle, the park has flourished into a splendid botanical garden with charming waterways and heritage highlights.

Begin your exploration of the pretty parkland at the Torhaus Rombergpark. This historic structure was the former gateway to the estate and now contains an interesting art gallery. Make your way along the tree-lined paths to the lake, which reflects the lush greenery back toward the trees in the summer and spring months.

Explore a network of paths that highlight different areas of the park along your journey. Walk around a rich variety of European trees in the arboretum, which was expanded by the director Gerd Krüssmann in 1950 after extensive damage from World War II. The diverse trees he planted have thrived and stand amid some of the tallest trees in North Rhine-Westphalia.

As you continue around the landscaped park, you’ll see a terrace with palm trees and scenic monuments within the greenery. Check out the gardens’ four greenhouses, which were added in 1958. Here you’ll see desert plants, including cacti and succulents, as well as tropical plants and lush ferns.

To the south of the gardens, find a café serving coffee and light meals. If the sun is shining, take a seat on the outdoor terrace and enjoy a snack with garden views.

Rombergpark Botanical Garden is situated in southern Dortmund. There is a subway station on the park’s northeastern border that can be reached within 20 minutes from Dortmund’s main railway station. Combine your visit with a trip to the nearby Dortmund Zoo. The botanical gardens are free to visit daily. Visit in spring or summer to see the plants in full bloom or enjoy the lushness of the greenhouse at any time of year.
