Lovely Lobby/Restaurant, Thin Walls, Grumpy Staff

There are not many hotel options near the Rome airport and chose the Golden Tulip due to the positive ratings. It is pretty, full of art, & comfortable. The high points end there. Our room was fine - beds not really comfortable and only a thin sheet on top (I refuse to use comforters since I know they are not often cleaned), nice shower, overall clean. Bare bones room, which is what we needed for a stay before an early flight. We went to the patio in the back near the pool & restaurant for a drink, which is lovely. Dinner service starts at 7:30pm, though, so plan accordingly. Our service was not great at the restaurant but our server was clearly overburdened with tables and was pleasant, had great English, and did the best she could. We gave her a nice tip since she did the best with what she had. The bad part came with after dinner. A large tour bus had just unloaded and the bellman was taking luggage up in the small elevator. He said we could not use the elevator to get to our 4th floor room since he would be using it for some time. This is unacceptable. My mother has bad knees & can't easily climb 4 flights of stairs (especially after a 2 week trip of heavy walking). The walls were thin and there was significant raucous coming from the restaurant patio - we could hear everything though our window was closed. We barely slept due to that noise & the banging around above our room. Be sure to sign up for shuttle service early, as space is limited and it runs on the half hour.
