Saint-Aignan is a village of charming houses along the Cher River. Typical of the Loir-et-Cher region, it has its own medieval castle. The commune also features picturesque nature trails and a zoo. Visit the Zoo Parc Beauval, which has a focus on the conservation of its animals. Stroll through the park to encounter numerous endangered species that are bred here before being sent to other zoos. From the zoo, make your way northeast along the river for 2 miles (3 kilometers) to reach the historic center. As in many other Loir-et-Cher locations, this village has a castle. Gaze up at the inspiring structure looming over the city.
While in the historic center, meander along enchanting cobblestone alleys to small boutiques and restaurants. The village is known for its Valençay goat’s cheese, green berry lentils and pastries full of mashed potato. Have a springtime meal of fresh strawberries and sautéed asparagus and local wines.
