Sumptuous interiors adorn this Catholic church in downtown Salta, where classical art and detailed gold work are complemented by an elegant and understated exterior.

Contemplate San Alfonso Church and the impressive architecture and craftsmanship that make it special. Learn about the history of the building, take a quiet seat on a carved wooden pew or see a local religious festival parade.

Examine the neo-Gothic architecture of the building from the outside and admire the paired turrets framing the grand windows and central entrance. At night the church is marvelously illuminated like so many of the old buildings in Salta.

Be amazed by the richly decorated interior and high vaulted ceiling. See the replica painting of Our Mother of Perpetual Sorrow that was gifted to the region by the Pope in 1865 and is said to have been painted in Greece in the 14th century.

Experience the incredible Fiesta del Perpetuo Socorro, an annual religious festival organized by the church that takes place in June and July. Watch the parade pass by accompanied by hundreds of Gauchos, Argentinean horsemen from the countryside with a strong cultural heritage and an elegant traditional way of dressing. See the crowds gather to honor the procession in which the painting of Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow is paraded through the streets. Hear the traditional songs as they are sung by thousands of devoted participants into the night and accompanied by the ringing of the church bells.

Read the informative signs about the building. It was constructed between 1908 and 1911 at the impetus of the archbishop of Salta and named after the 18th-century theological writer and saint Alfonso María de Ligorio.

Walk or take a taxi to the church that is close to the Plaza Güemes and a few blocks from the city center. Stop for a break at the nearby restaurants and cafés serving traditional Argentinean food.

Visit the San Alfonso Church to see the magnificent display of art and culture that adorn this local sight of worship.
