A Historic Hotel, but quite Historic

Posted Feb 2, 2016
Pros: Restaurant, location, historic feel
Cons: Better room amenities, updated bathrooms, foam pillows, ACs that work
Location: Short walking distance to convention center, near a mall and easy access to Riverwalk. Right next to the ALAMO.
I choose this hotel primarily for its proximity to the convention center, though I may have also been spoiled by more modern hotels. I will say that I didn't hate my stay, but I felt cramped by the hotel. My room was small, maybe just over 200sqft, not including bathroom and closet. Bathroom felt more it had been a restroom instead: first a strange step UP to get in to it, then the very restroom style toilet and sink fixtures, shower head that felt like something from summer camp. There was a desk, but half of it taken up by the television, and no not much space to work at either. Hotel doesn't offer foam pillows, a big deal breaker for me since I hate hotel pillows because they're too soft and offer no support. The Colonial was a nice restaurant, the two different steaks I had were nice, but felt over priced for the quality. Breakfast was a good option, with a huge buffet to choose from. Each day I went though, not many people in there. The location is good for lots of other stuff, a huge mall just besides it means you have options for food, and it had a fair bit of access to go where you wanted. Historic is exactly what the hotel is: charming, very much of the time, low key, very much like walking in to a hotel 50-60 years ago. However, it is historic as well, and lacks lot of the standard updates you'd find else where in more modern hotels. But I imagine that is by design.

Cons: I was unhappy with the chemical/gas smell in the meeting room. I has a constant headache for the 2 days that I was in there.
Accommodations were great and the hotel food was above average

Historic hotel, with the pluses and the minuses

Posted Jan 29, 2016
The lobby is very nice; grand and clean. The staff was fine. The room was a little disappointing; you could really tell it's a "historic" hotel. The wood in the doors was thin and flimsy feeling, the room seemed a bit small and plain, although it certainly had an excellent view of the Alamo, which was right outside the window.

Nice hotel close to river walk.

Posted Jan 21, 2016
Pros: Close to tour buses, river walk, downtown shops.
Cons: Bed was too narrow. Our room had a full size bed, not a queen size bed.
Location: River walk
Last night of stay, outside temp was 45 degrees. Woke up hot around 5:30 am with room temp 79 degrees. We have thermostat set at 70 degrees auto. Called front desk and was informed that hotel AC/Heating overrides individual room temp, depending on outside temp. Temp inside room got up to 80 degrees, at one point between 5:30 am and 10:30 am. Hotel did not charge for valet parking during stay, as compensation for our uncomfortable stay.

Beautiful! Colonial Restaurant was amazing! Lock on our room stuck but always opened, couple of minor issues with housekeeping but over all a great stay!

could have been better

Posted Jan 2, 2016
the history of the building was great. I enjoyed all the antique decorations particularly. and the staff were very nice too. but the rooms were small and a bit utilitarian. one of the beds smelled strongly of wet dog and had obviously been cleaned or deodorized with a chemical that smelled like wintergreen mint. the result was a bed that smelled like a wet dog covered in toothpaste. ha! the worst part of the stay was that it was over 80° in both our rooms and the building's air conditioning would only deliver heat. they apologized and delivered fans. the hum of loud box fans could be heard through the open windows of all the nearby rooms all night long. so if you like cramped, loud, smelly, hot hotels and love toothpaste then the merger is the place for you.
