Good but over priced

Posted Sep 25, 2016
Pros: Location and not a hotel overrun with children.
Cons: Have a business center and charge less for extras. A feeling of grandeur is not created by cost it is done through service and ambience.
Location: Great location in La Jolla. Plenty of good dining places. Relatively easy to get to other places from. Not a family holiday location.
Great location and room had a view of the sea. However access for handicapped people is poor, everything is an extra and no business center.

Needs a facelift....

Posted Sep 19, 2016
Pros: It was a good location in La Jolla
Cons: They need to invest $$$$$$$$$ into this property
Location: We were also disappointed in La Jolla so we only stayed for breakfast which was at The Cottage which was excellent!!!
The staff was very nice as well as the hotel lobby. The problem was the room. The bedspread and curtains looked like they were from the 80's.... Ughhh so disappointed when we opened the door into the room... Our ocean view was just ok due to the fact that we had to look over some ugly roof tops. The room was also musty, never a good sign!!!! The rug was old and dirty... We checked out. The hotel was very nice and didn't charge our card even though they had a 48hour cancellation policy.... They were understanding...

This hotel threads the needle

Posted Aug 2, 2016
My wife and I were unfamiliar with the La Jolla area and decided to do a quick getaway and chose the Colonial based on its reviews in Expedia. Driving into La Jolla on a Sunday afternoon through menacing traffic underscored the importance of a great location, and the Colonial has it. The staff was very polite and quickly got us going. We found the hotel, while quite old, has managed to stay very current with decor and upkeep. The view was perfect. Not a huge room, however every detail was on point. We had dinner at the restaurant downstairs (Nine-Ten) and the food and service was excellent as well.

But we take great pride in keeping it current and up-to-date, while maintaining our historic charm. I'm also very happy to hear that you had the chance to dine at NINE-TEN. It's one of the finest restaurants in the region and an experience not to be missed. We hope to see you back again soon. Sincerely, Terrence Underwood, General Manager

Older, but well kept hotel

Posted Jul 11, 2016
Stayed at the Grande Colonial for four nights. If you are looking to visit San Diego, but don't want to stay downtown La Jolla is a great area to stay. It's about 15min from the airport and easy to get to. The hotel is located on a main street, but is still quiet. It's close to lots of shops and restaurants. It's an older hotel, but overall well maintained. It's clean, beds are comfortable and we found it to be quite quiet. We didn't spend much time in the hotel, but we're happy with our stay.

Thank you, Nicole, for the lovely review. Indeed we are an "older" hotel. We celebrated our 100 year anniversary just a few years ago. But as you mention, we are absolutely committed to making constant improvements to the hotel to keep it updated and modernized...add the while maintaining that historic charm. We are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed it and we hope to see you back soon. Terrence Underwood, General Manager
