Great view as I stayed in room 202 in the building next to the pool.

Thank you for the 5-Star rating. We are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your visit. The room you stayed in happens to be located in the original building of the hotel, which opened back in 1913. It holds a special place in La Jolla's history and I'm so happy you enjoyed it. Hope to see you back.

Rooms are very old and dated. Trim work and paint is sloppy, fixtures are old. Grout has mold on it in some areas. Smelled like an old dying person's home. Overall, it felt more like a motel with a turndown service. Front desk and bell employees aren't very friendly and don't acknowledge you. The valet service is a joke, they park your car in a tiny lot off the side of the street next to free street parking. There's free street parking around the same block as the hotel without time limits. The only thing good about this hotel is that it's close to the beach and La Jolla cove. However, there's a lot of free parking around the beach so it wouldn't have been a problem if we stayed at another hotel further away and drove to the beach. We will not be staying at this hotel ever again.

It was a very nice hotel which sat a block or so away from the ocean.

Better than expected

Posted Feb 8, 2016
Pros: Everything
Cons: Just a few cosmetic updates
Location: Shopping, fitness facilities, restaurants, ocean, all within short walking distances. Easy access to freeways
Had a kitchen and fireplace! Two views of the ocean and a big bathroom. I was really pleased as I didn't expect anything but a nice room. It was clean and the staff was very accommodating. The restaurant was very good, also. I was very happy and would stay again. Right by the ocean and convenient to everything.

Great location, small bathroom

Posted Feb 7, 2016
Pros: Beds, location.
Cons: Bathroom is so tiny that we had to keep towels outside the door to keep them dry. Not much room to change and no vanity to do make-up, etc.
Location: La Jolla is lovely. Just steps from hotel to the beach, shops, restaurants. Great sunset and seal watching within two minutes walk.
Beds were super comfy, location cannot be beat. Bathroom pretty tiny. Shower spray hit me at the shoulders and I am 5' 7". My 6' 3" hubby wasn't well accommodated by it. Hotel wallpaper getting tired. First floor lobby and restaurant are lovely. Patio and pool are nice, as well. Liked the convenience of the valet, though it came at a price $$. Book this one for the character and location, not for the luxury. Bathroom drain was clogged but attended to immediately when we reported it. Television only worked for 20 minutes at a time and then the sound would switch off. Maid service missed us one day despite our leaving for the day at 8:30 AM and returning at 4:30 PM. We probably could have called desk for prompt attention upon our return but decided not to bother. Despite all, we would probably stay again.

Historical cool hotel super close to the ocean

Posted Jan 30, 2016
Stayed two nights there and had a relaxing time. The hotel is very cool due to its history and location. The adjacent cove is really a neat place to walk to from the hotel.

Great hotel that is near the beach and the shops

Posted Jan 20, 2016
If you like older hotels with architectural charm and excellent location the Grande Colonial is for you. Our room was nicely decorated and larger than expected. The staff was very friendly and took care of all of needs. The Hotel has one of the better restaurants that we have eaten in. Our dinners were superb.

Bright and cheery

Posted Jan 3, 2016
Pros: Friendly staff, bright and clean. Homey rooms. Feels like a resort.
Cons: Nothing
Location: The village offers a good variety of restaurants and shops all within walking. Activities are within a reasonable driving distance.
We loved this hotel. When we walked in, we noticed the lobby was so open and bright. It was very inviting. The staff was very friendly and made checking in easy and quick. The room was updated and painted in inviting colors with a homey feel. It was large with a sitting area and a desk if needed. There is nothing negative about this place. We loved our stay here and will definitely be back. Our favorite place in La Jolla.

Best Hotel in La Jolla

Posted Dec 31, 2015
Pros: People who work at the hotel and the services they provided.
Loved this hotel. Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent services. Clean and comfortable rooms with ocean views. Wonderful restaurant with fabulous food and wines. Beautiful architecture with charm, history and characters. Conveniently located in the center of the town - walking distance to the ocean, the many nice restaurants and bars, and the shopping places in La Jolla. In summary, the best hotel that has the best location in La Jolla. We will stay at this hotel again next time.

Reading your review made me smile. Aside from all the other things you mentioned, our number one priority in all areas of the hotel is to provide first-class service...but service that is very genuine and warm as if you are a member of our family. I am so happy that came through and resonated with you. I will be sure to share your comments with our entire management team to reiterate how important this is to our guests. Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. We look forward to having you back soon. Terrence Underwood, General Manager
