Top of the Hill!Posted Oct 7, 2015
Pros: The staff were exceedingly helpful and friendly
Cons: The general look and feel of the rooms is tired but very clean. Also include tea & coffee in the hotel or possibly the rooms
Location: Union Square simply walk down the hill. There's the Italian and Chinese quarters close by for eating out, the cable cars & Alcatraz a must or Napa wine
Mark Hopkins sits on top of Knob Hill in San Francisco and certainly not for the faint hearted as it is a steep climb! Staff are very friendly and helpful but the room and décor look a little tired. The meals we had there were very good but expensive, service good. Too few lifts in the lobby for the amount of people staying there is a concern.

Great location in San Francisco.Posted Sep 21, 2015
Pros: Location, comfortable and historic.
Cons: Buffet breakfast
Location: Chinatown, easy walk to the Embarcadero and on to Fisherman's Wharf.
Skip the buffet breakfast. Overpriced and not that great. Service was poor in the dining room as well.

Nice place to stay on Nob Hill, out of the frayPosted Sep 17, 2015
Pros: Top of the Mark is always a fun hang out! Good restaurants closeby on Russian Hill.
Cons: Better pillows and towels.
I liked staying on Nob Hill. It was easy access to 101 and 280 and nice to be away from the fray of SOMA, especially during the big tech conferences. Very nice staff -- very responsive and nice.

We were disappointed in the locationPosted Sep 16, 2015
Pros: Not much....we would not stay here again.
There was no gift shop; the business center was located in the lobby with many people around and when one considers what we were paying for our very ordinary room, it seemed rather 'petty' to charge even a nominal amount for short use of the computer and to print our airline boarding passes? Also -- we felt there was an exhorbitant charge per day to log in to Wi-Fi - despite the fact that in hotel literature it represented 'free' Wi-Fi...when questioned, the desk clerk did say that it would be complimentary if one was a member of the Inter-Continental 'Club' (free to join - which we did). There were no restaurants in close proximity...and the hotel restaurant did not offer any choice for breakfast other than their buffet (no menu ordering)....and the hotel's location (on top of hill) was not conducive to walking - at least 'up' the hill very many times thus requiring either a cab or cable car.

Disappointing Stay at the Mark HopkinsPosted Sep 16, 2015
My husband and I booked a 2 night stay at the Mark Hopkins that included breakfast. The price we chose on Expedia only referred to the first night. The second night was much more--over $100 difference. We were not informed about that until we got the bill. As noted above, we also signed up for breakfast. The first morning we enjoyed it and looked forward to the second breakfast, especially because we had an early flight out of San Francisco and a long, traveling day ahead of us. That's when we found out that breakfast started serving at 6:30am. We had to leave the hotel at 6am to catch our flight on time. So, because room service didn't allow for a hot breakfast until 6:30am, we missed breakfast all together. This was very disappointed because we paid for it. There was no mention of breakfast times from Expedia. If that had been mentioned, we wouldn't have signed up for breakfast on both days. This was a disappointing adventure into San Francisco......

Nice hotel , good locationPosted Sep 16, 2015
Was a nice place. Not sure if I would say it was worth the price. It's beautiful on the outside and the location is decent, but the rooms were nothing special. Was a basic room. Beds and linens were comfortable. You definitely pay for the name.

Historic StayPosted Sep 14, 2015
In addition to the wonderful all round hotel and its staff, we liked the added aspect of learning the historic significance of the immediate area. It accounts for the term hob knobing, something I would likely never have known had I not stayed there.

Excellent Classic HotelPosted Sep 13, 2015
Pros: Everything, particularly its excellent staff, large rooms, history and elegance.
Cons: The windows are single pane and allow quite a bit of traffic sound to get through. Fortunately, the street quiets down at night.
Location: The "Top of the Mark" restaurant and bar has incredible views. A cable car stop is nearby. Walking is quite requires some steep climbs, but is fun.
The staff of this hotel cannot be beaten for hospitality, friendliness and attentiveness. Everyone was wonderful! The hotel itself is a classic gem - very traditional, wonderful location and classy. If you're looking for modern, this is not your hotel though it is very well maintained, clean and comfortable. It is pricey, but the quality and excellent service justify the cost.
