Nice Hotel in Japantown

Posted Mar 13, 2017
Pros: Location is great. Enjoyed the reasonably priced restaurant for breakfast.
Cons: The hotel is due a renovation, it feels threadbare. The bathroom door doesn't lock.
Location: Great ramen and sushi within blocks. Many places to choose. Fillmore street nearby is filled with bars and restaurants. Easy Uber into North Beach.
We enjoyed the wine reception in the late afternoon. The lobby is a social place. The restaurant on the first floor is very good and unlike most hotel restaurants is very reasonably priced. We had to change rooms the first night because the heat did not work, they were very nice and helpful making the change. A minor inconvenience. It is a fun neighborhood to explore, some nice bars and restaurants in walking distance. Parking was $39/night.

Hi, Stu! I'd love to know some details of your experience since our hotel renovation actually concluded one year ago. Perhaps you could give me a call when you have a moment? In any case, I'm glad that you had a 4-star experience overall and enjoyed the neighborhood and affordable parking. Thank you!

Great Central Location

Posted Feb 27, 2017
Pros: Staff, cleanliness
Cons: Tea/Coffee facilities not replaced daily, had to ask. The independent restaurant in the hotel is not much to write home about
Location: Very Central with good public transport or a good walk if you prefer Uber is an easy option
Good Size clean and tidy room, hotel staff are really helpful, free in room safe. Hotel is in a good central location to all mid and downtown activities

Thanks, Ian! And we'll give housekeeping a heads up to be more on top of replacing tea and coffee items. We'll also let the staff know that they were a big "Pro" otherwise and the room was so clean! Thanks!

Quiet location

Posted Jan 24, 2017
This hotel is small but very well appointed in a quiet location of Japan town close to lots of restaurants and boutique shopping and a park. They serve wine served from 5 to 6. The front desk staff are very helpful. They include a lot of little touches that make your stay very comfortable. The room is a good size. Mattress not the best but good enough.

Thanks so much, Sheilal! I will share this with the front desk and thank them as well. I'm glad their service and the little touches / amenities and location all came together to create a five-star experience for you. To improve the support under all mattresses, we are replacing all be platforms this week, so hopefully that brings us from "A" to "A+" :)

Great Style and Great Location

Posted Jan 8, 2017
We loved our stay at the Kimpton Buchanan! All the details are just right, from the lovely scent that greets you in the lobby to the Japantown-inspired room decor and robes. The location truly couldn't be better -- just steps away from great noodle houses and the Kabuki Sundance Theater in Japantown, and all the fun shops and cafes of Fillmore Street. Room was a little tight for a family of 4 but very comfortable. Would love to return.

Nice hotel with mall nearby

Posted Dec 23, 2016
We only stayed for 3 days at Kimpton. We liked the staff and cleanliness. Food and mall were just within walking distance. The challenging part is to find reasonable priced parking. We ended up park our rented car on the street. Access to the lobby was pretty challenging too with steep steps downward.

Thanks so much, Anonymous. I'm glad the cleanliness and service were spot-on. If you decide not to valet park here, there is a public garage one block away for the rock-bottom price of $23. It's located under that neat Japanese mall you mentioned. Also, when you return to the hotel, if you wish to avoid stairs, keep in mind the entry ramp to our side door. We can show you the way!

Expect a motel, not a Kimpton

Posted Dec 22, 2016 on Hotels
This is definitely not "Kimpton" quality, I'm very curious what the affiliation really is. The lobby looks nice and that's where it ends. There is no room service, only a hot pot restaurant on the 1st floor. The room looked dingy and more like a 2 star hotel. Lots of black scuff marks all over the walls. The mattress was similar to a mattress pad on cardboard - I've never actually stayed in a hotel with such an uncomfortable mattress (I'm not especially picky at all). I live in the neighborhood and booked this room as a luxury - expecting Kimpton quality of a boutique hotel. However, this was more like a motel. There's also a daycare behind the hotel -- so for the first few hours I was there I just heard children yelling and screaming. When I made phone calls people could hear the kids on the line, it was that loud. The windows have no insulation for sound whatsoever. Neither do the doors - It sounded like my door was shaking or someone was coming in whenever someone walked in the hall. I was so shocked and disappointed by how bad it is - I don't know how it has the current ranking that it does. The photos online were not representative of the room I was given.

Hannah, I would love to know your room number if you have a moment so that we can have a look at these items. As you mention, I have not heard this kind of feedback so I am eager to get to the bottom of this if you have a moment to drop me a line directly. I'm so sorry this was your experience. Thank you! - Emily, GM

Clean hotel, not crazy expensive

Posted Dec 21, 2016 on Hotels
Hotel was fine, and not as expensive as a lot of hotels in San Francisco. It was clean. The bathroom had a very small sink area, and the room lacked a mini bar (the hotel sent a bag of a few snacks up on check in which is a nice touch; i prefer to have more access to water, etc). Other than that, the staff were very nice, and very helpful. Lastly - the hotel could use a more upscale restaurant and bar.

Thanks, verified traveler. I am glad that you had a good stay and that both the housekeeping and front desk staff impressed you. The mom & pop restaurant on the first floor is definitely casual, though I am thrilled that they offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For more upscale dining, let us know your interests and we'll make sure to recommend some things on and around Fillmore Street like The Progress, SPQR, or Octavia. There are some fun bars in that same area (1.5 blocks away) as well.
