Cons: Decor is a little dated but I believe they are working on renovating
Well the hotel is in the Tenderloin so ya it's a little rough, but be smart about it. It is just at the edge of the Tenderloin. Make sure to turn left when you leave the hotel or left onto O'farell and it's fine Great places nearby like Liho Liho Yacht Club! Waited at the bar for a spot was insanely good. (5 min walk) Hotel is Great value for San Francisco. I received an upgrade to a larger room no charge. Great room with an insane shower. oh and eat at the Progress. My favorite meal on this recent trip. Stephen leslie

Good/Bad/Ugly

Posted Oct 12, 2017
We spent 7 nights at Hotel Serrano. Upon arrival in our UBER car I was disappointed in the street view and entryway of the hotel. It was nondescript and not very inviting. Upon entering the lobby was beautiful and antique but looking a bit shabby. The elevators a bit rickety and very small. Our room was 607 and very close to the elevator which was fine because we never heard any noise from people coming or going. The room was small, shabby, furniture and carpet worn. The wallpaper in the bathroom was coming off a little bit. The toilet seat broken. Old bathtub not easy to stand inside because of the curved sides. The beds very comfortable but the pillows too stiff and high. We slept very well because - even with the window open it was very quiet. No coffee in the room. One had to go down to the lobby to get coffee. The gym was very nice. All in all we had a great time but did not meet my expectations considering what we paid for the room. Hated paying an additional $220+ USD for urban taxes. The restaurant - Jason's - was horrible. We didn't bother to eat there because it was cold, loud and uninviting. I understand they will be remodeling. Hopefully it will be done tastefully. I liked having free WIFI. Location great! All in all I would rate this hotel with a grade of "C".

Very Disappointing for the Price

Hotel has some potential but unfortunately my room was so dirty I could not even convince myself to take a shower there. There was mold on the tiles and dust everywhere.

Reasonably priced for SF

Old fashioned decor and very friendly staff combined with centric location in downtown SF made this hotel a good choice.

Room and beds were small. While lobby was charming, it shows wear and tear

Pictures are misleading...

Pros: bed and shower.
Cons: Update the rooms, maybe make them bigger, especially the bathrooms...
Location: Horrible location in terms of the area (very dirty, drugged people everywhere) although close to many famous places to visit as a tourist.
We didn't know anything about the city when we booked this hotel, which seemed to be at a nice location, close to everything you want to see as a tourist, and it looked like a nice hotel. Overall the hotel service was not bad (except for the Urban Fee they charge per day, which they deduct from what they charge you when you get to the hotel to cover any damages and give you back after you checked out. We were not informed about this Urban fee until the last day). The rooms are incredibly outdated and small... Bed and shower were the best part of our stay I guess... The area of the hotel is THE WORST. Think crackheads and drugs everywhere, people literally peeing in the middle of the sidewalk (yes, I saw that twice... Obviously not normal people hanging around). The good part is that it was a 15 min drive to the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf... We tried walking from the hotel to the spot, but it would take about 40 minutes to reach our destination plus the area is incredibly shady. I would not recommend this hotel... Unless you really don't mind staying in an area like this and you are just thinking of a place to sleep and shower, not a nice place to stay outside of your home.

J, thank you for your feedback. We are sorry about your concern of the neighborhood and thus affecting your experience. Like many other brand name as well as boutique hotels in the same block as our hotel, we are located two blocks away from Downtown, Union Square, which unfortunately is neighboring Tenderloin District. We do often advice our guests to be mindful of their surrounding as they explore the city, as San Francisco Downtown is an area known to have issues with homelessness and heavy traffic. Please be assured that the incident is acknowledged and we apologize for the disappointment caused. We would also like to apologize for any confusion of the Urban Fee. We are very diligent to be sure this information is listed on our website as well as all third party booking sites. Please be assured that we will follow up with our team to make sure our guests are aware of the fee at the time of booking. And we hope that you will give Serrano another chance in your future travels to San Francisco.

San Francisco visit

Posted Oct 10, 2017
Pros: I liked the smaller and compact building. It is 17 stories tall but is easy to get around without walking a long distance. The lobby is beautiful.
Cons: The rooms were nice but need new furniture. As we were leaving they were beginning renovating the hotel and that is being addressed.
Location: The location is ok but the neighborhood along the side going down Ferrel St. is dicey. The front along Taylor is ok. Most attractions are close by.
The room was clean except for the telephone on the table was a little dusty. The furniture was comfortable. There were some aging and scratches present on the tables and armoire. The bathroom was big and had large whirlpool tub. The staff was friendly. Free coffee every morning in the lobby. I would return to this hotel.
