Close to Fillmore Street

Posted Feb 3, 2016
Pros: Location, friendly staff
Cons: See above
Location: Lots of great restaurants/shops
Disappointed in "renovated" hotel. Requested a king bed and was put in a room with 2 queens across from staff lounge/microwave. They did move us. Bolt on door did not work. Asked to be fixed but was not. No do not disturb sign that we noticed on other rooms. Toilet paper holder placed too far behind toilet, hard to access. Toilet "rocked" when sat upon, faucets were backwards, hot was cold, cold was hot. Air conditioning unit kept resetting to 86 degrees. No mini bar as advertised. Hallway rugs were dirty the entire stay. Not worth what we paid.

Hello, Sue, Since the team moved your room, I will hope to sort out which room number had all of these issues. We will be on the look-out as I want to remedy the toilet paper holder and so on. The hallways are looking much better with the redesign, and on the plus side, I see that you loved the location and the team was friendly and helpful. So, on balance, I hope that we might get a second chance. I appreciate your consideration!

Convenient location, great staff, needs updating

Posted Jan 25, 2016
Formerly the Tomo hotel (with Japanese anime theme), this is now more adult and more modern. Still conveniently located in Japantown. Staff helpful and friendly. Hallways definitely need updating and dark. Room itself was fine, but probably could also use updating. Parking is a bit of a pain, since garage is small and always full, so you have to park in the Japan Center Garage a block away (though price is very reasonable for overnight).

Thanks, Anonymous, I'll have to tell the "great staff" that you enjoyeod their service! The parking garage will have several more spots available in just a few weeks when we have all the carpet and things cleared out from our hallway renovation. As you mention, the corridors needed a new look and I think you will like it.

Hotel in Transition

Posted Jan 2, 2016
Pros: Price. Cozy room.
Cons: Furnishings, number of staff, decor.
Location: Central SF, so everything's accessible and speciality Japanese shops are a block away.
I'm not sure what's going on with this hotel's parent company, Kimpton, but this hotel, on a quiet street in Japantown (and a bit away from traditional tourist SF) seems like it was a budget hotel in an earlier incarnation. It's clear that Kimpton knows it needs improvement (there are signs all over saying "we know it doesn't look like a Kimpton, but here's our plan..." So, there are not the amenities associate with other Kimptons and the hallways look, well, penitentiary-like. But, the bed was cozy and comfortable and the room was clean and it was a bargain at the price I paid. It's not ultra-luxurious (and has a parking shortage) but if the price is right, don't hesitate. It seems like it will only get better in time.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, David. It is exciting to see the hallways starting to take shape, and that will definitely shift the whole vibe -- and the first impression especially. The rooms were absolutely gutted for the remodel, leaving just the good "bones" of large room size, so once the hallways are more in keeping with the design, I think it will all present nicely. We'll also have more parking available soon, though overflow is always available just a block away, and we can help with that!

Below Kimpton Standards

Posted Jan 2, 2016
Pros: The room was comfortable. The staff friendly and knowledgeable.
Cons: Overall this hotel needs to MAJOR improvements in the hallways and the amenities of the rooms. Better furniture to create that boutique feeling.
Location: Japantown. Plenty of cuisine to explore. Relatively close to Union Square (about a 35 min walk/ten min drive). Hotel parking is expensive at $40/night
This hotel falls far below the Kimpton standard of NY which is what motivated me to book. There were reviews referencing renovation...but I couldn't tell. The amenities were bare and the hallways were dismal. I booked a two queen balcony. I was so disappointed to discover the balcony was "faux". Don't expect any table or chairs to fit out there. You could open a sliding door however. There are signs through out saying the place will be updated but wait for it to happen. Kimpton value, standard and quality are lacking at this hotel.

Hello, ROP, and thank you for visiting us. It's great to see the room was comfortable and the service really stood out. The hallway improvements are indeed going to make a big difference to first impression, and they are wrapping up in February. Then for in-room amenities, we have made sure to include Frette linen, Keurig coffee/tea, and of course the Kimpton wifi, yoga mat, umbrella, "Forgot It? We've Got It?" toiletries, upscale Atelier Bloem bath products, and so on. We are also featuring shibori-print (kimono inspired) robes that are a fun sense of the neighborhood. As we brainstorm, please feel free to let us know any other amenities you would like to see. The parking cost is the best we can do, unfortunately, though sometimes parking packages are available through our website, and at least I can reassure you that the $35+tax puts us about $15 less per night than downtown.

Nov 19-22, 2015 stay, 2 rooms, family trip

Posted Nov 30, 2015
Pros: Rooms were nice.
Cons: Corridor finishes.
Location: Plenty of walking/running/transit opportunities within easy access of the location. Plenty of dining options within walking distance.
We realize the hotel is under renovation....but the common area corridors on the floors were really a bummer. Lobby was great. Rooms were great. Would come back if the corridors are completed.

Thanks, Anonymous. We like to think of ourselves as central and connected while just apart from the tourist mobs of Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf. Between the various private and public transit services, you can go all over. Though of course walking the three neighborhoods right here is pretty neat, too!

Nice hotel

Posted Nov 18, 2015
Hotel is currently being renovated. Hallways are creepy in their current state. It was clean enough a little odd though. Bathroom door would not lock as it was a swinging door that would not even close properly. I like my privacy when going to the bathroom so I found this disturbing. The bed was very comfortable, I had a great sleep. I had requested non smoking area and I think a neighbor was smoking because I could smell cigarette smoke coming into my room. Luckily it was in the morning and we were getting ready to check out otherwise I would of complained. Otherwise we had a great stay.

Thanks, Anonymous, and I'm glad you had a "great stay" overall. I know just what you mean about the hallways. That upgrade will be coming shortly, and in the meantime the rooms are all brand new, including those beds -- glad you had a great sleep! As for the cigarette smoking neighbor, we have a zero tolerance for that in our non-smoking hotel, so, like you said, feel free to complain away if it every happens again and we will contact the naughty neighbor! Thanks and take care.
