Ok hotel needs updates !!!

This hotel in San Jose was ok. We paid for a 3 star hotel but I think with a few improvements it could really exceed that. The rooms need the grout re done in the bathroom BADLY! The shower curtains need to be switched out ASAP (the flower curtain needs To go and they need to stick to one color, that's easy to wash as needed). The comforter on the bed needs to go as well! They are old school motel like comforters. They should do sheets and blankets in white that's easy to wash with bleach and take down the old art work and plants hanging above the bed and switch it out for something a little more updated. Also the hotel had no working A/C. With these small improvements, I think it could make a big difference.

Good value hotel

Good price in a decent area of San Jose. Big benefit is that it has a pool

Good spacious hotel

Pros: Big room, helpful staff, lovely sitting out area for breakfast.
Very helpful staff, big spacious room, interesting hotel. A bit noisy but all city hotels are.

Disappointing

The hotel is not as portrayed on Expedia. While the picture of the pool and hotel looks inviting, it really is quite deceptive. We were in Costa Rica for 10 days and stayed at various hotels throughout the country. 9 of those stays were booked through Expedia. We rented a car for those 10 days that had a GPS system. We must have driven past Hotel Santo Tomas 4x. There were gates all around the property. You needed to ring a doorbell to get onto the property and then ring another doorbell to get into the hotel. It reminded us of a prison. The cost of this hotel was about the same as most of the other properties we stayed at and they far exceeded our expectations. We were completely disappointed and feel that Expedia should make some adjustments to the description of this property. We did not stay there and had to hunt for another property to stay at where we could feel comfortable and safe.

Hi, Your phrase of ( had been pretty successful finding our way ) indicates that you as many other travelers find in Costa Rica that the GPS, along with Google Maps doesn't work the way you want. I just finished a 17 day driving trip to Portugal and found the exact same thing. I think by the time you arrived at the lobby you were tired and angry and for no fair reason, punished the hotel. There is a big and I mean big lighted sign on top of the parking lot over the street, just look up to the right , that clearly indicates Hotel Santo Tomas Parking in big green letters on a white background, where to go for the reception, 20 meters further and to please ring the bell. It says on the sign ( Ring the Bell ) Yes, the hotel has security bars as does every other property in San Jose and most parts of Costa Rica , hey this is Latin America, but then again have you been to Chicago, Philly, Baltimore, East L.A. and many other places in the good old USA lately. I urge all readers of this review and my reply to go to any of the web sites where we are listed and view the photos. Thank goodness for the other hundreds others we have which are all pretty darn good from the past 27 years in business ! thanks for the review Thomas

Pros: The staff was very friendly and helpful. The garden was very pretty.
Cons: Even though hotel seemed secure there was no lock on the window which made me nervous.

Central and close to eating places

Pros: Central close to shop, markets and restaurants
Cons: Fridge and coffee making in rooms
Location: Shopping and eating
We went on a couple of tours that the staff recommended and were very nice.

Hi , yes we are close to lots of restaurants and all types of shopping. There is a really nice Italian coffee machine in the hotels lobby , that grinds the beans right when you make your coffee, espresso, mochaccino and other hot beverages , 24/7. Price is about $1,20 per cup. Thank You for your review.

Centrally located.

Pros: The staff and owner were very pleasant, helpful and always on hands,
Cons: I was satisfied.
Location: The hotel is in a good location for things to do in the the city, and only about 30kms from the airport.
Although in the city, the hotel is very pleasant and quiet. We walked to the principal sites, but you could easily get a cab if that was your choice. We also found it easy to use the bus..
