What was clearly a glorious hotel needing spruce

Posted Sep 27, 2016
Pros: The facilities and general ambience. Lovely 'edge of jungle' feel with location. Great pool size, good choice of restaurants.
Cons: Pool needed to be less aspiring to the Rio diving pool and a touch bluer! Rooms though clean on surface needed a touch of care on grouting/maintenance
Location: Great location on the way to Sepilok, close to both the airport, Sandakan town and the Orangutan/Sun Bear sanctuaries.
We stayed in this hotel for a night in September. It was clearly at the edge of the season and very quiet. The staff were lovely and helpful, but it's clear this hotel is in need a of a bit of a spruce up to have the substance to go with the natural charm. The pool was just on the edge of turning green, and the rooms though dated and charming, could have done with a touch up and clean. It's a shame because this has everything going for it in terms of facilities and location but sells itself short on some relatively small undertakings.

An older hotel but very comfortable and fabulous pool. A little further out of town than the other hotels but a beautiful setting and not too far to walk or grab a taxi to the centre.Very quiet

Nice quiet setting

Posted May 30, 2016
Sandakan is hot! And it was nice to come to a classy hotel after all the walking and trekking. The check in was smooth and simple, and help with baggage was second to none. Although I didn't use the swimming pool, it looked terrific to me and families were having a ball. Rooms were clean and very spacious. MIng's restaurant was a terrible disappointment though, wish I had eaten at the Plantation Cafe instead. The buffet breakfast at the Plantation was terrific in the morning, although the friendly chap who did the eggs did not seem to speak any English. It's true what other reviewers say about a lack of a relaxing bar. There is the main lounge you can sit an relax in but it isn't particularly "chill" worthy as it is situated right at the hotel entrance and is not particularly isolated. Nice for a quick drink, nice cocktails and extremely limited wine selection (much like the rest of Malaysia)

This Hotel was absolutely beautiful. Could not fault anything. Room, Breakfast, Staff, Pool & surrounding area were all amazing. The Hawkers night had a great arrange of foods to try. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this Hotel. Thankyou for such a memorable stay. We'll be back someday.
