On the drive to and back from White Sands, we encountered many thunder storms. This one is of the most incredible that I've seen in my 11 years of living here. This mushroom like cloud is hovering over almost the entire city of Santa Fe, NM.
#Storm #SantaFe #NewMexico #CeliaLuzPhotography #BW #Cloud Beautiful cherry blossom tree dripping in rosaries. #red The famous and beautiful staircase in the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, NM. When the chapel was completed in 1878, there was no way to access the choir loft. It was suggested that a ladder be used, but the nuns who used the chapel didn't like this idea because of the long habits that they wore. So they prayed to St Joseph for a solution. Shorty thereafter a carpenter showed up and offered to build the staircase for them, but he needed total privacy to do so and locked himself in the chapel for 3 months. When he was done he left town, without even accepting payment. The staircase he built is not only beautiful, but it is an architectural wonder. It makes two complete 360 turns, there are not metal nails, and there is no center means of support. The identity of the carpenter was never known. #newmexico #santafe #lorettochapel #church #stairs #architecture Most amazing sunrise I have ever laid eyes upon. Thank goodness I am a morning person. What a gift this was.
#SantaFe #NewMexico #CeliaLuzPhotography #Color #travel #explore #rainbow #sky #iphonography #sunrise #landscape Make sure when in Santa Fe to visit the Loretto Chapel! Legend has it, that once the chapel was built there was no way for the choir to access the loft above. The nuns in the chapel prayed to St. Joseph (the patron saint of carpenters) and immediately afterwards, a mysterious man built the stair and left with no pay.
The staircase itself is perplexing because it has no means of support, and also there are no nails used in its construction. It's definitely mystifying #architecture

A visit to the historic Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.
#Green When the Loretto Chapel was completed in 1878, there was no way to access the choir loft twenty-two feet above. Carpenters were called in to address the problem, but they all concluded access to the loft would have to be via ladder as a staircase would interfere with the interior space of the small Chapel.
Legend says that to find a solution to the seating problem, the Sisters of the Chapel made a novena to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. On the ninth and final day of prayer, a man appeared at the Chapel with a donkey and a toolbox looking for work. Months later, the elegant circular staircase was completed, and the carpenter disappeared without pay or thanks. After searching for the man (an ad even ran in the local newspaper) and finding no trace of him, some concluded that he was St. Joseph himself, having come in answer to the sisters' prayers.
The stairway's carpenter, whoever he was, built a magnificent structure. The design was innovative for the time and some of the design considerations still perplex experts today.
The staircase has two 360 degree turns and no visible means of support. Also, it is said that the staircase was built without nails—only wooden pegs. Questions also surround the number of stair risers relative to the height of the choir loft and about the types of wood and other materials used in the stairway's construction.
#StunningStructures One of the many statues located around the downtown area of Santa Fe. Over on Canyon Road is the studio where these, and others are made. #Green Oldest House in USA...
Some believe built in the 1200s... More than one million years ago, huge volcanic explosions in New Mexico rained ash and cinders over what is now the Bandelier National Monument near Santa Fe. The eruption deposited ash over 400 feet thick. The pale rock seen here through the trees are the remains of the ash flows. Prehistoric native Americans built their pueblos in these cliffs digging rooms into canyon walls. The ceiling and inside of the cathedral at the heart of Santa Fa. I really love this place. History: The monument of the Cross of the Martyrs was built to honor the Franciscan friars who died during the Pueblo Revolt in 1680. There has been controversy over this because there is no monument dedicated to the Natives that were slaughtered in the battle.

The Lensic Theater, located at 211 West San Francisco Street in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is an 821-seat theater designed by Boller Brothers of Kansas City, well-known movie-theater and vaudeville-house architects who designed almost one hundred theaters throughout the West and mid-West, including the KiMo Theater in Albuquerque. The pseudo-Moorish, Spanish Renaissance Lensic was built by Nathan Salmon and E. John Greer and opened on 24 June 1931. Its name derives from the initials of Greer's six grandchildren.
The Lensic was completely restored and renovated between 1999 and 2001, and provides Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico with a modern venue for the performing arts. Santa Fe is such a stunning city. I can't get enough of the art and culture of this beautiful town.
