Finding a hotel in Oia is a great way of staying close to the port, which is ideal for excursions to neighboring Thirassia, without missing the island's picture-perfect surroundings and sunset views. A great place for viewing the caldera, Imerovigli is popular for its selection of appealing hotels and resorts. Firostefani offers a peaceful neighborhood where accommodations have spectacular views. Just north of Fira, the capital of Santorini, this traditional village has plenty of charming cafés, diners, and inns.

Santorini's unique volcanic-sand beaches are great spots for sunbathing or relaxing with a good book. Staying in the seaside village of Kamari puts visitors in close proximity to one of the island's best beaches lined with deck chairs and umbrellas. Set along the island's southeastern coast, Perissa is an ideal spot to book a room for those wishing to enjoy the area's beach and its facilities, including a beach volleyball area. Just south, the lively beach resort of Perivolos offers long stretches of black sand, crystal clear waters, and plenty of accommodations.

History buffs should consider staying near Akrotiri on the southern side of the island. The prehistoric town is said to have been destroyed and covered by ash during a volcanic eruption in 1650 B.C. The preserved settlement is now open to visitors. Staying in Fira, the biggest town on Santorini, puts visitors in close proximity to the Megaro Gyzi Cultural Centre, which stages regular cultural events and performances. For easy access to the Naval Maritime Museum, consider accommodations in Oia.
