The best area to stay in Schaffhausen is the Old Town (Altstadt), which is the historic center of the city. This area is characterized by its well-preserved medieval architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and painted facades. It's largely a pedestrian zone, making it pleasant for walking, and is centered around the Fronwagplatz, a main square with a historic clock tower. The Old Town is also home to the Munot fortress, perched on a hill overlooking the city. For couples, this area offers a romantic setting with easy access to many local restaurants and shops. For travelers who prefer a quieter environment with direct access to nature, the areas along the Rhine River just outside the Old Town offer a nice alternative. These locations often provide views of the river and are close to walking and cycling paths.

The best time to go to Schaffhausen is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and sunny, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing.During this period, you can fully enjoy the Rhine Falls, Europe's largest waterfall, with boat tours operating frequently to the rock in the middle of the falls or to Schloss Laufen. The pleasant temperatures are also great for exploring the old town's painted houses and the circular Munot fortress on foot.Shoulder seasons, like late spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October), also offer a pleasant experience with fewer crowds and mild weather.
