OK value but a bit uncomfortable in Far NorthPosted Oct 1, 2015
Pros: Decent value , booked on line
Cons: Bed was small and uncomfortable for someone 6'3'' And request for "quiet" room ended up being a room overlooking Thurso's main road junction!
A rather old-fashioned hotel, helpful staff: breakfast ok but watch out for the coach parties !

Pleasant affordable hotel in the centre of ThursoPosted Oct 1, 2015
Pros: Our room was warm clean and comfortable and excellent value. There was a gas fire in the foyer which added to it's warmth and comfort.
Cons: The décor is a little passé and the bedside lights rather dim. A few toasters could be provided at breakfast to allow clients to toast their own.
Location: The Royal Hotel is situated in the centre of Thurso within easy reach of shops and the railway station. It is also handy for the Scrabster ferry.
We searched for a hotel as near to the centre of Thurso as we could find. The Royal beat all of the others in price and was exceedingly good value for money. I first used this hotel way back in it's hey day in the early sixties when it was second to none for it's opulence and culinary supremacy. Since those heady days the hotel seems to have lost some of it's kudos and sparkle. However, we found our room warm, roomy and comfortable and our breakfast was served quickly and was of good quality and variety. One small gripe though; the toast was hard and cold. Since we only stayed one night and dined in one of the local Indian restaurants, we are unable to comment on the standard of the evening meals. Since eating in is not a requirement of the stay then this should pose no problem. Finally; the staff were always courteous and helpful.

The room was fine, however the horrendous loud music from the pub (Mr C) downstairs was totally unacceptable, I eventually got dressed at 10pm, left my 15 yr old daughter in room, & went downstairs to complain about the noise, I got a move to another room at the back of hotel, we both eventually got settled at 11 pm. Definitely won't be going back.....!!!!

Last minute choicePosted Sep 2, 2015
Pros: Staff very pleasant and helpfull
Cons: Bedroom although clean and comfortable looked tired and sad with peeling wallpaper. Limited car parking on site although public car park nearby.
Location: Central location in town. Only there to visit friends in area
This is old hotel which has been neglected in the past but present owners are upgrading.

road trip 3Posted Aug 30, 2015 on Hotels
Very poor access - on main road with railings and traffic lights . Unloaded bags from rear with no parking spaces , had to park in co -op 2 blocks away. Friendly reception but short staffed queues permanently . Unfriendly bar staff . Our Room at rear loud external music . Not recommended and quite disappointing .

Makeover 999Posted Aug 29, 2015
Pros: Room and bathroom were basic and okay.
Cons: Shut it down, gut it and refurbish it.
Location: Thurso is a great place just to walk around. Beyond Thurso, the region is beautiful and worth exploring.
This hotel is tired and rundown. The rear car park is a dumping ground for wood, chairs, etc., etc. Carpet stains galore throughout the hotel hallways. Crooked, uneven flooring made me feel like I was back in the Navy. I didn't trust the cleanliness of the kitchen, so I never ate breakfast. In passing by and peeking in, I noticed a lot of nicely dressed elderly people eating breakfast every morning. Maybe it was okay after all. The room was clean and the housekeeping staff were good at what they do. The whole place is just downright depressing.

Basic. Very noisy locationPosted Aug 24, 2015 on Hotels
Was put in a room above the local bar which was very noisy - the room vibrated. Was moved when requested. Very noisy all night. Hotel needs updating with double glazed windows!
