Nice historic hotel downtown Shanghai
Room was spacious and classically furnished. Some of the furniture, drapery, and lobby finishes were a bit worn, but to be expected in an older, historic hotel. The staff was friendly and accommodating and spoke English which made check-in and out easier. I would stay at this hotel again.

Faded glory Old Shanghai, worth considering
I stayed in Shanghai for 8 days, and split my stay up among 3 hotels, roughly at the same price point (about $110 U.S.). One was modern, for a soft landing in a new city. And then I chose the Astor for 2 nights, along with the Miller Villa for another 2 nights, to capture Old Shanghai opulence. The Astor Hotel succeeded in that front. It was a bit faded, It was certainly quite glorious in its day, and is still quite nice (if a little rough around the edges in parts) now. And it is very convenient for walking and many nighttime activities (ie walks along the Bund, E. nanjing road, etc.). The subway stop on the useful #10 line is a bit of a trek (maybe around a mile, not sure though) along a sometimes quiet street. My first room, a “classic room” at the second to lowest rate, smelled horribly (mold? Sewage? It was bad) They changed my room to a considerably upgraded, super large and posh, historical room at no charge. I was impressed by their responsiveness. The breakfast room is stunning. The breakfast itself is large, with a good deal of variety. This was more of a quantity-over-quality approach to Chinese breakfasts, I think. But I was so taken by the stunning dining room that I was happy. History buffs may, like me, also consider a stay at the Motor Villa Hotel, in the former French Concession area. In my view, the Motor Villa is posher and more polished. But both are beautiful Grand Dame hotels, and both are worth a stay,

Good location, but a bit tired...
The location of the Astor House is amazing! And, my room was clean. However, the mattress was really hard. And, the thermostat wouldn't control the temperature. While the Astor House has an historic charm it is a bit rundown in the lobby area. All that said, the price was right and I had good service, overall.

Steeped in atmosphere
Felt a bit like sleeping in a museum, which was kinda cool. Great location near the Bund. You get a big breakfast, not included, in the elaborate Peacock Hall. Staying at this hotel enriched our stay in Shanghai.

Historical Gem
The location can't be beat. It is just minutes from The Bund, but just far enough away that you aren't overwhelmed by the crowds. The room we stayed in was huge and had a view of The Pearl from our window.

Very good position
Especially if you want to be near the Bund A little far from metro station Breakfast very good - staff very nice - Room large but needs some attention as it was showing it's wear & tear. Reception area needs an upgrade & more guest lounge seating to relax in while waiting. It is oldly worldly with lots of character. Would stay there again

loved the room; hotel has lots of history, unique features; great museum about the hotel and the evolution of the bund region right in the hotel; fun to stay here! staff will turn down your bed in afternoon, give you next day's weather report. lots of neat hallways to explore--the hotel has some hidden corners, unique features, not like the new types of hotels where every floor is exactly the same!

We enjoyed our stay. Though we requested the rooms to be side by side; while the room numbers are indeed in sequence but one was located in farthest corner, though not a big deal, must have been language barrier. Over-all,our stay was pleasant.

Lovely but old hotel
The lift well was undergoing refurbishment so we had to walk 2 floors of steps. The Wi fi in our room was abysmal which is not very handy when in a foreign country. The daily service was welcomed although the rooms are in bad need of refurbishment themselves. We were awoken one morning by children playing loudly in the adjoining room which sounded like they were in our very room. The acoustics are not good for sleeping in even tho there are black out curtains. The smell of cigarettes seemed to waft in to our room as well.

Beautiful old hotel with a lot of history.
The Astor was the first building in China to have electric light and a telephone. I love history and really enjoyed my stay. The hotel has a rather charming shabbiness, in a good way. If you like gleaming and modern this hotel is not for you. But if you love historical buildings I highly recommend. An astoundingly good breakfast buffet is worth every penny. In a very good location right near the river in the Buns. Staff has limited English, but try very hard. I was always able to manage to communicate. A 5 minute walk to the Riverside Promenade, The monument of hero's and other historically important buildings. The only criticism I have is check out can take a while....in my case about 20 minutes. I thought it was a wonderful place to stay.

Wonderful historic hotel
Staying at this hotel is like staying in a museum! If you enjoy historic buildings and the history of Shanghai then this is the perfect place. As you first walk through the hotel you'll notice the extra high ceiling and the cracking sound of the dated but polished wooden floorboards, which immediately differentiates it from most modern hotels. Although the buildings are old, the rooms are clean and maintained well and decorated with appropriate vintage furniture. It's worth reading about the significant events related to this hotel, which would make the experience extra special as you explore the hotel grounds. We stayed at a celebrity room (Bertrand Russell) and it was worth every extra cent. Breakfast was at the ball room and had a great varity of western and Chinese food. Most guests are independent travellers (about 50% foreigners) so the place is a great escape from the usual tour group crowds found in other hotels near the Bund.

Historical landmark, less than luxurious hotel
If you are looking for somewhere to stay that is a bit different than all the usual international hotel chains then this is an option. The Astor House has been well preserved and the room we stayed in was furnished as it may have been in the 1920s. The amenities are basic but decent and the food on offer for breakfast catered to taste of the majority of guests who were Chinese. The staff were friendly and spoke English well. The location is good for those who want to enjoy the Bund waterfront area.

Historic and rather special.
Pleasant reception with adequate English spoken. Help with cases and entry etc. and calling taxis. Good little bar in the foyer with a simple menu, and a wide reaching buffet breakfast with a chef to make your eggs as you like them, if you don't want Chinese food. Breakfast in the beautiful historic ballroom. Easy walk across the bridge(watch out for selfie sticks and wedding couples having their photos taken) to the Bund and the main shopping street.

Astory House Hotel, one of my Favorites.
Mix up on arrival for my room which was paid for with breakfast but it was sorted out, being so late/early in the morning when I checked in, they gave me a beautiful suite then provided me with what I paid for after speaking to hotel.com, a classical room with view and breakfast included. It too was a wonderful room. This type of hotel is my absolute favorite, takes you back in time when it was exclusive and and just reeks of history, creaking floors but so highly polished, an old Raffles and I would stay there each time I go to Shanghai. I love it.

Nice from historical perspective, but that is all
Hotel is dated, was under renovation as well. Neat place to stay for historical significance, but I will not stay here again. My room was very nice, but street noise was significant. Poor English by staff. Breakfast was generally poor and catered to Westerners, mostly Europeans. I would not stay here again.

“Golden oldie”
This hotel, built over 150 years ago, is a tour in history. Every lamp, ceiling light, column head, is a reminder of times past. The refurbished Peacock Room is splendid, though its dignity seems to suffer a bit as it now serves as the venue for the breakfast buffet. The lobby cafe was enjoyable, if a bit expensive, and we had two long afternoons just sitting there, eating slowly, and reading. We were given a room on the sixth floor, and it was a bit of a maze getting there. That was part of the fun though, as it reminded us of they used to build things: not all regular, and therefore a bit of fun. The hotel is just north of Suchow Creek, a ten-minute stroll to the Bund. I would call it pretty conveniently located, as it is not right on the Bund (with the massive crowds and traffic jams).

Stay in History
Stay here for a quirky feeling of old Shanghai. The building is something like 100 years old, built for and by Westerners at the high tide of imperialism. The building's architecture and history is fascinating. Beds are very hard (I like that, others don't). Rooms and building overall are clean, but has a bit of old shabbiness feel to it as well. Staff pretty friendly. I recommend it as a unique experience. Good for a couple nights in Shanghai, then move on to a more modern place for comfort at your next stop in China.

Beautiful building, poor service
Overall my two-night stay was pleasant as far as the physical hotel building is concerned. The classic room I stayed exuded the good old ambiance, together with a large desk and a handsome seating area. However, despite the gorgeous room, the hotel service needs a far more improvement. While the hotel brochure placed in the room mentions that a ticket service office (for train, airplane etc.) is available, the front desk rejected my request to obtain a train ticket and simply suggested a travel agency that took me about 10 min. of walk. Plus, the bizarre thing was that the hotel even didn't accommodate my request for a room service in the early evening. It was perhaps I spoke in English, and I wasn't even directed to an English-speaking personnel.

Business Stay.
The Hotel is basically a museum of sorts which can mean either old and dated or a hotel with a lot of charm. It actually was a little of both. The location was superb because it was a short walk to the Bund which made the price worth it. Wifi worked well. However, room service was kind of weak. For example, I called room service well within service hours and the response that i received was "no food". Overall an okay stay. Would stay again if price is right.

Comfortable hotel with lots of history
This hotel isn't "fancy", but it certainly has lots of charm and history along with creature comforts and cleanliness. There are plenty of photos and explanations around the hotel which outline the important role this hotel had in the last 150 years of Shanghai history which my partner and I enjoyed reading. As well, it's very well located with The Bund and a subway stop very close by. Make sure you find out whether breakfast is included or not in your room rate. If not, it's about 80 yuan per person extra.

Gorgeous old hotel with lots of history, great staff, and beautiful large family room! The only problem is our AC didn't seem very effective and the room stayed at 27 all night so a bit overly warm. We were only staying one night though so maybe the hotel would have fixed it? Would definetly stay again!
