Learn more about Shonto

Tucked into Navajo Nation territory, this small community serves as a gateway to the ancient cliff dwellings of Navajo National Monument. Explore nearby ancestral Puebloan ruins where rangers share stories of the remarkable people who thrived in this dramatic desert landscape.

So I drove through the night, to get here before sunrise. Unfortunately the trail is closed until the visitor center is open, which was after sunrise. I was able to race down the trail and see why some 120-200 Navajo called this home at one point. It is perfectly placed to get shade through morning and a spring is nearby.
