Hi, Thanks for the review and so sorry to hear about the bedside lights. I have to agree not great for reading a book. Will look into it and see how we can improve. We do have a mix of furniture for all rooms and some do have squashy Sofa's and Arm chairs. I think you must have stayed in room 6 with the two large armchairs with high backs. Good to hear food was great and quiet right about the peaceful and gorgeous countryside. When you next return try room 2. Many Thanks Willem

Dear Lee, So sorry to hear about our staff not being particulary welcoming or Friendly. I can assure you they are and I have a feeling I know why you gave us a score of 6/10. You checkout this morning was by phone asking if you had anything to pay. Not the normal way to check out as most or alomost 100% of guests check out by coming to reception. We were caught off guard and so sorry we did not ask but trust me we do ask when checking out properly. Another reason is maybe to do with the email you sent us on the 24th September 2021 and I quote. "Just to confirm that I have cancelled our restaurant reservation, as we discovered that since I booked, the tasting menu has been changed and there are a number of items on the menu that we do not eat. I also note that the cost of the meal has increased by £10 per person. Unfortunately, we have only just become aware of these changes." As you and I know the last few months things have gone up in price. Staffing and food being the biggest and we have had no choice but to increase our prices for the first time in 3 years. We have not taken advantage of the staycation. Breakfast is better than nice but each to their own. Hope you are more undertstanding with the next place you visit and just to make it very clear we are "A Restaurant with Rooms" not a "Hotel" Best Wishes Willem Vlok

Thank you so much for the review and glad you had a good stay. Difficult getting the bed right as most guests want to buy our mattresses. When you return ask for room 1 or 3 as they are twin rooms that can be made into a double with a mattress topper. Makes the bed nice a soft for sure.

A bit unfair Stephen. We had to close Old Downton Lodge Friday the 16th July or 3 nights due to Covid. Not something we wish to do but we always think of our customers first. It is yet again another big blow for our business.

Dear Sophie, Thanks for the review and feedback. A difficult review to answer but I will try my best. The Market menu is larger than the tasting menu portion size for sure and on the Main course Chef always makes a side dish of Potato as well as larger meat and accompaniement. But Glad you enjoyed the food and we have amazing local suppliers. We did have a problem with the boiler and it was sorted on Monday by our plumber. We had a airlock that tripped the oil fired boiler. We do not offer a turndown service at night but we do service the rooms each day between 11am and 3pm. Hopefully housekeeping did replenish your biscuits and tea on Saturday as you stayed Friday and Saturday. I have checked and they say they did. If you needed more biscuits and tea Friday and Saturday you should have asked as we are happy to replenish. Regarding phone signall EE works very well at Old Downton Lodge and Vodaphone and O2 do not. We have great Wifi thoughout the Lodge as we have Fibre to the Premises. I have asked our IT man to look into the wifi in room 1 and as far as he can see it works very well. We only have terresial TV in the rooms and all TV are digital so signal is fine so not sure about this. We do not have Sky. Please do stay again and if you call me directly I will make sure you have a great and memorable stay.

Thank you so much and glad you enjoyed your stay. We are a bit off the beaten track and we love the peace and quiet. Ludlow does have a lot of charity shops but we have a lot of great shops, Bodemhams since 1860 and still going, The Silver Pear, Rickards, Pye Powder, Harp lane Deli, Broad Bean, 5 independent Butchers, a book binding shop, Holloway's of Ludlow, Vaughans, Taste at No 1, The Mouse trap, GD Ginger Antiques, Matt Fothergill, La Lumiere Ltd, Castle Book Shop, The Chocolate Gourmet, Myriad Organics, Expensive Mistakes Dress Agency, The Fish House, Bentley's Wine Merchants, Castle Gallery, County Tiles & Bathrooms, The Marches Pottery, Ludlow Interiors. Etc etc I can go on. You need to come back and explore some of the most amazing little shops and shop owners in Ludlow.
