A visit to the Skagen By- og Egnsmuseum (Skagen town and regional museum) is great for families and those who love history. Step back in time and see how the people of Skagen lived a century ago. Enter the dwelling of fishermen and the workshop of a ship’s smith, see the fascinating maritime history of the Skagen region come to life and board a historic boat to explore the sea.

Since 1927, the Skagen Town and Regional Museum showcases the traditional ways of life in northern Denmark. The museum is now part of the Nordjyllands Kystmuseum, after merging with the Bangsbo Museum and Sæby Museum.

The attraction has open-air and indoor exhibitions to give visitors a chance to really experience history. Restored heritage homes, boats and workshops are dotted on the grounds. Come here to discover more than 200 years of local history, including the formation of Skagen.

First check out the indoor exhibits, a chronological journey through time. The chronological displays cover pre-1875 Skagen, the period between 1875 and 1907 and finally the past century until the present day. Admire the amber gem collection, study old photographs and see old paintings of the region.

Venture outside to see historic buildings. Step inside the dwellings, from elaborate country homes to the huts of poor fishermen. The old Dutch windmill is the only one remaining of the mills that used to operate in Skagen. See the boats used by lifesavers during the early 1900s at the old life saving station. The memorial hall here features a wall dedicated to drowned fishermen.

Outside the museum is the Den gamle Smedje is (the old smithy). The staff can point you to this heritage workshop.

In summer, head to the harbor to enjoy a cruise on the museum’s fishing cutter “Hansa”.

The Skagen Town and Regional Museum is located in central Skagen. You can walk there or take a car and park on site. The attraction is closed on weekends, except during summer. The museum closes early, so come in the morning or early afternoon. Children enter for free. Cruises cost extra.
