"Knew of hotel before we left the country 16 year"
Knew of hotel before we left the country 16 years ago and we knew it was conveniently situated for our 8 night stay to visit family. To be honest, we expect some "faded glory" but were so pleasantly surprised at the overall standard. The staff were absolutely brilliant - we did not meet one person who did not have a smile on their face, or help in any way they could. The building is obviously old, but the modernization has kept the "feel" of the building excellently. The rooms were very comfortable and individually decorated which was a nice touch - the room that the couple with which we were traveling was totally different in decor - so refreshing from the identical decor of many of the well-known chain hotels. I gave 'pleasing' (4/5) for the room because, fortunately/unfortunately we had very warm weather while we were there, and would have appreciated A/C in the rooms, particularly overnight. Overall, we would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

"Friendly and welcoming hotel"
The hotel was really not what we had expected, it was a nice surprise when walking into the reception - as the pictures had not done it justice. We had booked a room for three and the only problem we had was that the room had not been set up appropriately, but after talking to reception this was rectified immediately. The staff were friendly and helpful as well. The only downside was that the room was quite warm, even with all the windows open. But that is hardly too much of a grumble. It was conveniently located with a bus service near by, striaight to the city centre.

"Prime location in South Hampton"
Location is excellent. Hotel in the historic district. Walked the walled city. Plenty of places to eat nearby. Breakfast not included. Perfect location to catch a cruise ship. Shopping close by for forgotten items. Elevators only go to 3rd floor, we were on the 4th. Lots of stairs. They stored our extra luggage on the ground floor. No air conditioning if it gets too hot.

"Comfortable & Quiet"
I really enjoyed my stay here. There was some confusion checking in as the staff wasn't sure if I had already paid through Expedia, or if I still needed to pay upon arrival, but we figured it out. I stayed in a single twin room and it was small, but I really wouldn't have needed anything bigger. A kettle and selection of teas were provided. The bed was really comfortable - I only stayed here for one night, but I didn't want to get out of bed because I felt like I was snuggled on a fluffy cloud. Room was clean and updated. Nice furnishings. They offer breakfast, but it's not free. Despite being so close to the road and right by the "party center" in Southampton, my stay was quiet and I got a good night's rest.

Set on a broad inlet, Southampton is the largest city in southern England and cruise capital of Northern Europe. Some of the world’s largest liners are based here and many more visit regularly. The centre is modern but retains several historic buildings, two excellent art galleries, two theatres, plus good eating, drinking and shopping. Ocean Village leisure complex at the marina features a new museum of aviation.
