Southeastern New Mexico Vacation Packages

Walk in the footsteps of a 19th-century outlaw, explore a huge network of caves and learn about UFOs in New Mexico's southeastern region.

Southeastern New Mexico is a place of mysteries and legends and its landscapes are astoundingly varied. This pocket of the United States is Billy the Kid country and many believe aliens collided with the earth here. At the very least, the landscape they crashed into is otherworldly, stretching across the horizon for hundreds of miles. Visit historic Wild West places or explore the country for UFO sighting locations in this curious New Mexico region.

The unusual topography of southeastern New Mexico ranges from vast tracts of parched, dry desert to rocky, mountainous regions. Hike and drive through the white gypsum dunes of the White Sands National Monument in Alamogordo and venture deep below the surface of the Chihuahuan Desert to explore the subterranean caves of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

Become acquainted with some of southeastern New Mexico’s mysteries, legends and history by visiting the region’s many historic attractions. Head to the village of Captain, where Smokey the bear cub was rescued during a forest fire in 1950. Hear the story of how the bear became an iconic mascot for fire prevention at the Smokey Bear Historical Park. A few miles away is the town of Lincoln where Billy the Kid lived, fought and was eventually imprisoned. Visit the Lincoln Historic Site, which includes the old county courthouse and jail where the outlaw was held.

Make your way to Mountainair for the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, a combination of three cultural sites containing old Spanish mission churches and ancient pueblos.

Learn about the Roswell Incident, one of the most unusual chapters in the area’s history, by visiting the town of Roswell. Many UFO watchers are still convinced that a flying saucer with aliens on board crash-landed just outside the town in 1947. Explore museums including the Roswell International UFO Museum and Research Center.

Reach southeastern New Mexico by flying to Albuquerque International Sunport in the central part of the state. New Mexico’s comprehensive network of bus operators reach all corners of the state and Amtrak has services to some towns in the area.
