"...there is a distant drumming - thrum thrum thrum – quiet, insistent, growing - the heat and humidity an oppressive and constant companion - beads of sweat form then run down my brow. I feel a sense of heightened awareness the kind you get during times of great stress. I am aware of each droplet of sweat as it forms, can trace its course down my face. I hear the drone of each individual mosquito, note its landing, follow in excruciating detail as it penetrates my skin, injecting the anti-coagulant that allows my blood to flow freely, accompanied by an occasional viral interloper; I hear, no feel, the thrum thrum thrum of the distant drums. ‘When will those supplies show up? Where are they? Reserves are all but tapped’ - still I muster my small band of scientists to remain focused on the incredible discoveries they are making each and every day - yet despite my best efforts, it seems clear - the natives are getting restless..."
