Nice hotel with a nice beach and views

Posted May 24, 2017
Pros: Friendly Staff Great location Great views Close to town for shopping Always clean Good food
Cons: The hotel is a little rough around the edges and older. New Kiosk system for dinner reservations was a nightmare
Location: Location was GREAT. Close to Phillipsburg, and great views. Other side of the bay from the cruise ships so that's nice
Overall a great experience. Great views. Close to Phillipsburg. Nice and quiet area. Good food. Very nice employees. Got volley ball games going almost each day. Hot tub was nice to relax in the evening. Kiosk for dinner reservations was a nightmare. You have to use a kiosk to place reservations for dinner, which is fine. Except the system is slow, and you have to put in information in a few fields, then it tells you that there is no open times. Then you have to go back and select another date and try again. The other issue is that you can go on this kiosk, make a dinner reservation. Then go on again and make another reservation at a different place.(even at the other resorts) You are obviously going to skip going to one of them, but the one you don't go to, is not available to someone else. There is no "policing" of this system so the reservations fill up fast, because people book multiple times/restaurants. General Manager of the hotel even said he was not pleased with this new system. Spoke with him for a few minutes about this at the kiosk and he said it was a new development as of a few weeks ago. We spend 8 days here at this location. We had a nice time at this establishment overall. Would consider staying here again if we come back to the island

Nice hotel close to beach but disappointed

Posted May 24, 2017
Pros: Beach
Cons: Needs renovating. Too many steps. First night there ems came for 2 people who fell near lobby. You need thermostat control in rooms. Food.
Location: very close to where cruise ships comes in and very close to philipsburg to go for shopping. be aware for though for time share salesman
this was a nice resort but when we visited their sister resort in maho beach, we realized that we made a mistake in booking at great bay. Casino on site sold us to go to great bay only to find out that it is a video casino-no live dealers. Beach was very nice but just no activity on site at resort. don't understand their a/c concept-thermostats in room do not work. Whole resort is set to one temperature which was freezing. i slept in a fleece jacket over my pajamas along with a fleece blanket and was still freezing in the room. would hate to pay their power bill. No one told us that there was bus transportation that cost $2. Taxi was only thing we knew we could get around with other than car or scooter rental. Lunch was okay but did not like the night meals. Had a hard time getting reservation for the restaurants and ones we did get, was truly disappointed in food. Buffet at night was terrible. Food was cold. Too many steps at great bay resort. First night, ems came for 2 people that fell and hurt their ankle or leg. Did like the in room frig and liquor that was restocked daily. Luckily, we were able to transfer to the maho beach sonesta and actually got a wonderful room with thermostat control in the room that worked. Much more activity there and right across street from resort was a real casino with live dealers. Food and breakfast and lunch was very good; however, still very disappointed in night meals at restaurants and buffet line.

Five stars for staff and great food!

Posted May 20, 2017
Pros: Location to the beach
Cons: A pre-warning about mosquitos would have helped me.
Location: Safe and interesting place to which one can walk. Great shopping just 5 minute walk away from hotel
This was my first time visiting St. Maarten and I was very lucky to have chosen a hotel that has so many pleasant staff member. While the room had some issues (that any older building might have), the maid service was excellent. I really like the fact that you can visit, and use the amenities at the other hotels on the Dutch side.

The worst all inclusive resort ever!

Posted May 19, 2017
Location: Day trip of the island, water ski, shopping.
I must say this is the worst all inclusive resort I have ever stayed at. Location: Located on the West end side of the Great Bay and about 20 minutes from the Princess Juliana International Airport. The resort is very quiet, and it is about 5 minutes walking distance to Philipsburg shopping area. Food: The resort has 3 restaurants. One is buffet style, and the other two are opened only for dinner and you also need to make reservation one day ahead. On a scale of 1 to 10, the food at this resort is about a 2. The only reason why I give a 2 instead of 1 is because the restaurant with the stone grill is pretty good. If you are going to stay at this resort, trust me, reserve as many nights at the stone grill as possible. Remember that the stone grill closes on rainy nights as it is by the beach without a roof. Also, I highly recommend the local Caribbean food outside of the resort. There are so many good restaurants on the island and I can't understand why this resort can't get its acts together and hire a good chef. Room: The guest rooms are okay, need updates. I booked the ocean view room and was given a room on the first floor *so much for the ocean view*. On the 3rd night of my 5 night stay, half of the first floor was flooded including the room I stayed in. Please see the pictures attached. Service: The service at this resort is hit or miss. Don't expect to see smiles on every staff. Activities: Casino and some music at night. Pretty boring.

Close to shopping and beautiful beach area

Posted May 15, 2017
Pros: Location to shopping, ocean front, pools and hot tub were nice. The cleaning staff was so friendly and very thorough!! Rooms were comfortable.
Cons: Food, service, drink choices, expand the casino.
Location: Close to Front and Back streets where there is a ton of shopping. Walk along the beach and you will get to the boardwalk.
My husband and I showed up for a 10 day vacation. Reserved a king room with ocean view. Upon arrival were handed champagne and a cold towel and we were thinking this was going to be an amazing place. Upon entering our room, we were given 2 double beds. We went back to the front desk and they said they don't guarantee the kind of room. We asked to speak to a manager and she was able to miraculously find us a king room with ocean view after telling us multiple times they didn't have any available. The food was ok but it wasn't available all the time. There were set times for the buffet (which is fine) but there wasn't much to supplement when it was closed. There were only 2 restaurants on site and both you needed to make reservations to go to. The casino was very small with only slot machines and electronic blackjack and roulette. The staff in the casino were AWESOME!! We bonded very well with William. He was always there asking if you needed anything and was very friendly. The beach service was great as well. Nicole was our girl!! The only issue we had with it was that she had a couple days off and the service was non-existent on the beach. We did go to the other Sonesta at Maho and the facilities as well as the food and service were much better. We also had a couples massage on our anniversary which cost $170 which was fine but I had bruised my shin and I asked the masseuse to not rub that part, he didn't rub my entire left leg from hip to foot. Disappointing.

The staff were professional yet friendly. Service was impeccable. Unfortunately I did you have one server at the buffet restaurant that was nonexistent. But everyone else was exceptional service.

Nice hotel gorgeous beach!

Posted May 11, 2017
Loved the beach, rooms were nice, staff was very nice and food was good! I wish the night life was better... but we were able to go to sister hotel in Maho which had tons of night life.. I think a free shuttle between hotels would make make this a 5 star!!

I am deeply dissatisfied with my vacation.

Posted May 9, 2017
Pros: I am require credit from Expedia to compensate for the difference between what I have paid for and what I have received as a result.
I reserved a room in a 4-star hotel with 2 beds. I also paid for upgraded room from Island View to the Grande Island View. Below is the description of the room that we received (room number 730): • There was only one bed. • The size of the room was so small that there was no gap between the bed and the table. Hangers with clothes in the wardrobe protruded outside to prevent closing the sliding doors. A small refrigerator was sitting right on the floor. • The water pressure in the shower was so weak that it was very difficult to take a shower. In addition, there was no hot water much of the time. The advertised bathrobes did not exist. • Air conditioning was very noisy and prevented sleep. • The fan noise in the bathroom was so loud that it resembled the sound of an airplane. The fan was switched on simultaneously with lighting. If one person went to the bathroom at night, the second one did not sleep any more. • Below the windows there was a road with heavy traffic and garbage collection. I do not understand what the advantage of the room with Grande Island View (for which I paid) compared to just Island View. • There were no Premium Channels, such as HBO, CINEMAX, SHOWTIME, etc., on TV as advertised. Food in the restaurant was much worse than in similar hotels. The menu was very limited. Management was even not able to calculate daily beer consumption. Almost always there was no Heineken beer in the beach bar.

Beautiful view, Hotel needs updating.

Posted May 8, 2017
The View and location were fantastic, make sure you spend the extra money to get the ocean view rooms. The Hotel definitely needs updating even though they claim it has been. We were placed in room 629, the ceiling portion between the bathroom and bedroom was so low,5'9 at the most that my husband had to duck his head to go back and forth. We went back to the check in and advised them we needed another room. They acted like they had no idea what we were talking about. Hard to believe since this hotel was built in 1972. They moved us up a floor, same type of room but no low ceiling. The staff in the lobby were not the friendliest actually almost rude not just to us but to other guests as we watched throughout the week. The Housekeeping and the restaurant staff were fantastic. You can tell who is working for tips. Sonesta might want to check up on this. The food was great and overall we had a good experience.
