Nice, but needing help.

My family and extended family have been staying at this hotel for many years. As I have traveled more, I have learned to expect more from $300 a night hotels, especially from an Expedia VIP hotel. While there are some wonderful things about the location, there were many details that made this trip disappointing. I reserved 4 rooms for my family and my extended family. I had called in advance to request early check-in, as I was traveling with my elderly mother and children. I ended up spending most of my first day going back and forth to check-in to see if rooms were ready. At 4:00 pm, after watching dozens of people check-in all day ahead of me, two of my rooms were still not ready. I was not recognized as a +gold VIP at anytime, and some of the front desk staff did not even know what a VIP was, or even that their hotel was a VIP member. The staff all over the hotel needs intensive customer service training. The hotel needs millions of dollars in renovations, which I understand are in the plans. Hallways, wood work, door jambs, tub and showers, etc. were in terrible condition. The beach is managed by a private company, so expect to drop a lot of cash if you want to lay at the beach on something other than a towel. The rooms are very small. The rooms have refrigerators, but that will cost you an extra $33 a day!!! On a good note, the weekend jazz band in the lobby from 8-midnight is wonderful. If you sit around the pool at a table for lunch, ask for Dean!

FANTASTIC!

Location: Beautiful sunsets and beaches and many restaurants nearby.
We enjoyed our stay at The Don very much. Staff was extremely nice. The beach and pool were our favorite along with the gorgeous hotel itself. We will definitely stay again in the future.

Terrible

I had to drive up here so I decided to stay at what I was told was one of the best hotels around. Paid about $300 for the night even though I had to check in late due to car troubles. Called to confirm that I was still coming and they gave me to clear that everything was still in place. I arrive and they'd given my room away and gave me some crappy room with views of the parking lot instead of the ocean which was what I paid soo much for. The staff was unwilling to actually do something about it. Get to my room to find dirty sheets, lights not working and a tub dirty with hair! Fast forward a few hours to a bit before noon when I was abruptly woken to heavy nausea because some sort of fumes/chemicals that were coming from whatever housekeeping was using ended up seeping into my room so I couldn't even attempt to enjoy the rest of my stay because I felt so sick. Upon arriving back to Miami I had to get rushed to the ER. Whatever chemicals they were spraying did some serious damage to my lungs. The past few day have been a terrible battle with just trying to catch my breath. Constantly grabbing by chest from the pain of not being able to breathe. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Not being able to breathe is the worst feeling imaginable. Worst part is hotel had nothing to say but sorry.. meanwhile my medical bills are piling up and i have to see a specialist

Amazing hotel, price to match

The chk in process was very smooth. The first room was extremely small with even smaller bathroom! I went back down to front desk and they moved me to a suite with no problems and were very understanding of the need for a bigger bathroom. The bathroom was huge and the room was beautiful. Overall, the hotel was amazing, the service, the staff, all amazing! Be prepared that everything is over priced! And I mean everything, our bill was way over what I wanted to spend, but I also didn't spare money on the umbrellas and beach chairs. We ordered food from the hotel a lot as well, so that didn't help with the extra expenses. If you are careful with your money, eat away from hotel, and bring your own beach chairs and umbrellas; I have no reservations in giving this hotel 5 stars for overall rating.

Excellent staffing and dining

Pros: Helpfulness of the staff, ready and willing to assist you.
Cons: Not a lot to do near by if you wanted to walk
Location: Spinners at The Grand was about a mile away, not too far of a walk. It was a great experience that we would do again.
Our stay at "The Don" was a great experience. The room was ready when we arrived and could start our vacationing the moment we unpacked. This was our first time visiting the Gulf and we have already decided we will come again. The staff was friendly and we had great dining experiences throughout our stay. The "concierge" Carol was a huge help when booking the room and transportation to and from the hotel. The only negative thought I have was that I was surprised how small the room was but the King size bed with the feather down comforter and triple sheets was a plus. How often do you actually stay in the room?

Great experience! We loved the rich history and the frat attention to detail! The staff were great and the the amenities are to die for! Great restaurants and poolside service! We really appreciated the royal treatment by the beach in our beachside cabana! Phenomenal trip! Will be back!

Check In Process

Location: We were a short drive from Dolphin Cruiser, Starlight Cruises and Fort DeSoto. We also enjoyed the restaurants near by.
The hotel was amazing about us checking in. Our flight landed a little early. I called the hotel and they said to come on to the hotel. The amazing staff greeted us, took our name and phone number, our luggage, and as soon as our room was ready, they would give us a call, but in the meantime we could enjoy the hotel amenities. About 30 minutes later, the staff called and said our room was ready ( this was before check-in time). Our amazing room was ready, our bags were delivered very quickly. Great stay!
