The mighty Mac! Beautiful as always!
The Mackinac Bridge, which is pronounced with a silent “c” at the end, is the bridge connecting the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. It is currently the third longest suspension bridge in the US, and the twelfth longest in the world. The bridge opened to traffic on November 1, 1957 which ended decades of the two peninsulas being connected only by ferries. The total length of the bridge is 5 miles and the total height of the main towers above the water is 552 feet. The Length of main span (between towers) is 3,800 feet. The height of the roadway at mid-span is approximately 200 feet above water level. The vertical clearance at normal temperature is 155 feet at the center of the main suspension span and 135 feet at the boundaries of the 3,000 ft. navigation channel.
There is a bridge walk held every Labor Day where the bridge opens up for people to walk across and view its beautiful scenery. Thousands of people cross this bridge on foot and are led by the governor of the state.
If you make the trip, there are great vantage points from which two view the bridge worth checking out. The first is on the south end of the bridge in Mackinaw City, at the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse Park at the south east foot of the bridge. The second is on the northern end in St. Ignace at the north west foot of the bridge called Bridge View Park.

#Michigan #PureMichigan #UpperPeninsula #StIgnace #Mackinac #Bridge #MackinacBridge #SuspensionBridge #Mackinaw #MackinawBridge The mighty Mackinac Bridge photographed as sunset light was dying and bridges lights were beginning to be seen. A nice city park where two great lakes meet.
#BeachBound Mackinaw Driving to the UP! On the jet boat ferry over to Mackinac Island. Massive gathering of Mini Coopers at Mini on the Mack! Attempted to break the Worlds Record for most Mini Coopers in a single parade. We needed 1451 to register and I believe 1319 registered! Close, but no record! Crossing the Mackinaw Bridge in Michigan with fellow Miniacs was a blast!!! Walk the lighthouse grounds and see the exhibits in the museum. You can even rent an apartment next door overnight. #Red The fifth longest suspension bridge in the world spans across the greatest of lakes. #AquaTrove Enjoy this public park with views of the Mackinac bridge and straits and beach access for swimming, fishing and boating. For a small donation, climb to the top of the lighthouse for great views of the lake and Mackinaw bridge over the tree tops and tour the living quarters of the lighthouse keeper. #InStone #Red Walk the lighthouse grounds on a self guided cell phone tour and visit the small museum and gift shop inside. #Red After visiting the lighthouse, walk the path to the shore to see this rock, used by French explorers five years before Plymouth Rock was used by the English and this rock is much larger than Plymouth Rock! Walk the grounds and stop in to this 1889 lighthouse and museum with panoramic views of the lake. #Red #InStone Less known beach in Mackinaw City, before Wilderness State Park entrance with small parking lot but worth a stop here. Eat with the locals here and try a homemade British pastie, an acquired taste. Choose from savory fillings of meats, vegetables, then type of gravy on top of the individual stuffed pastry pie. The beef stroganoff pastie is a favorite. Then have a homemade cookie. # SweetSpot See the largest ice breaker ship on the great lakes commissioned in 1944, open for tours, events, overnight encampments, with exhibits and a gift shop. #Red Start at the visitor center, museum, then walk the grounds along the water and enjoy the historical reenactments at this landmark fort and fur trading village. At this park, see the lighthouse then have a picnic, walk by the lake, and sit on the benches overlooking the lake and bridge, but no excavation nor metal detector allowed on this historic sacred ground. Inexpensive spot for lunch while exploring the quaint downtown for hot dogs, brats, sandwiches, fries and more. #Red Best view of this historic Fort is from the ferry ride under the Mackinac bridge over to Mackinaw Island.
