Not worth the money

There was a beehive on the walkway to our room. Management policy is to leave the windows open when not in use, which brought in a lot of inside the room. Very thin walls and could hear full converstaitons of other guests in the next rooms. We paid through Expedia and at checkout they said they have not been paid by Expedia, which caused a discrepancy that almost made us miss our flight. Wouldn't have been so disappointed if it was a cheaper hotel or closer to the Jaco.

Pros: Great central location. Close to Pacific Ocean, national parks and mountain attractions.
Cons: Hotel can update mattresses, more efficient air conditioners. Front desk staff were not very friendly ( except a new Canadian girl).
Location: Tarcoles river has crocodiles, zip lining in Jaco, visit national parks and see wild life in natural habitat.
Long flight. Costa Rica is expensive. Hotter than we expected and it limited our activities.

Villa Lapas Rainforest Eco-Lodge

Pros: Refreshing pool, great tropical garden, and lots of great bird sightings. There were Toucans that came most mornings to a tree near the pool.
Cons: Non-existent service from hotel staff (i.e. front staff act bored / garbage around pool not cleaned up for days), variety / improvement with meals.
Location: Lots of beaches close by plus other activities such as zip-lining, ATV rentals, etc are just 30 minutes away.
This is a very basic hotel that could use some upgrades. The outside property is the best thing with beautiful trees and the river running alongside it. Lots of birds in the morning. The best tip we got was not to bother paying to go into the National Park as we would see just as much at this hotel property as we would in the park - without the hefty guide costs which run up to $100 US.. There are lots of tour buses that come through - mostly birdwatchers. The good thing is that these groups tend to rise early and leave for day tours very early in the morning. On the weekends the local Costa Ricans take over - pool and restaurant and food choices. The rooms have decent air conditioners and new flat screen TVs. The beds were OK. Food was average at best and did not change for the entire week. Our rate only included breakfast which allowed us to explore the nearby towns for our other meals each day. We would not recommend staying for more than 2 or 3 days maximum and only to people who are not too fussy and interested in the birds.

A bit disappointed...

I stayed at this hotel about 12 years ago and it had a butterfly farm and everything...not anymore. They have expanded tremendously...not the quite place it used to be. They have different plans for food...do not get the lunch buffet unless you want to pay $25 per person. The food was good but a bit pricey.

Good. Normal hotel, normal food with limited options, it is a quiet hotel for family. If you need to go to beach or other close place need additional transportation.

Amazing waterfalls. Chef was amazing. Food was fabulous. Rooms were great. Staff was very helpful. Would advise better fans in food areas. Was a little hot eating. We loved being close to the waterfalls. Advise for those doing waterfalls the trip is for the extreme fit. Take lots of water and a snack Nothing else.

Pros: Staff were helpful and friendly, great location.
Cons: As an eco-resort there were no hummingbird feeders, can't understand why, an easy thing to do.
Location: Great location in forest. Good trails on hotel land and close to beaches.
Very peaceful and quiet during the week but busy at weekends.

Beautiful, nature friendly, comfortable

Pros: This hotel is in beautiful area, friendly staff, lovely trails into rainforest, 20 minutes to national park or Jaco, see crocodiles or sit by the pool
Cons: Food was uneven, menu and food quality could be better.
Location: Nature trails through the rain forest, national parks with amazing guides, boat tours, Jaco beach, shopping, snorkelling from Jaco to Tarcoles
Beautiful surroundings, trails, pool. We enjoyed walking on the trails, exploring parks and beach nearby (by car), sitting outside with a glass of wine. Quieter during the week, busy on weekends, wi fi mainly worked, pool, air conditioning for hot weather.
