The Canterbury Tales

Visit this reconstruction of medieval England to entertain the kids and discover the fantastic mind and stories of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer.

See the world of Geoffrey Chaucer come to life at The Canterbury Tales attraction. Bring the kids to enjoy the modern retelling of many of Chaucer’s famous tales, set in 14th-century England and housed in the beautiful St. Margaret’s church.

The English poet wrote The Canterbury Tales in a time of great social turmoil after a plague had decimated England’s population. Learn the moral lesson from each of his stories, which explore the lives of people from all across the social spectrum making a pilgrimage to the gravesite of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral.

For the best experience at The Canterbury Tales, get an audio kit from the entrance and take the self-guided tour. Specialized audio tours are available for younger children.

Chaucer’s stories depict and explore all parts of human nature, from the funny and the heart-warming, to the more sinister and mysterious. Enjoy the stories ranging from a knight who falls in love, to a pardoner who involves himself in a web of deceit.

Journey through the five rooms of The Canterbury Tales attraction and immerse yourself in a historic world of knights and nobles. Enlighten yourself watching actors recreate one of the tales in each room or engage with interactive exhibits. Though the exhibits are aimed at younger kids, the sights, sounds and even the purpose-made smells of each room make for a convincing experience of medieval England that will entertain adults as well.

Outside the attraction, families can also see the beautiful St Margaret’s church, which is worth a visit for its beautiful traditional exterior from pre-Gothic times. Visitors can also follow the pilgrimage described in The Canterbury Tales and visit the former tomb of Thomas Becket in the Canterbury Cathedral, which is a short walk away.

The Canterbury Tales is open year-round and has an entry fee. It is recommended to book ahead if you are visiting during school vacation periods when the attraction is at its busiest. The attraction is located in the heart of Canterbury and is easy to reach by public transport, bike or on foot.
