Royal Hotel

Posted Oct 11, 2017
Pros: Location, breakfast experience, staff.
Cons: The elevator (lift) was not user friendly and the hallways were confusing (although well labeled with directions).
Location: Approximately 1 mile from Scrabster. A short walk from the rail station.
Central location in Thurso. Easy to find. Breakfast was included and included a cooked Scottish breakfast. Check-in / check-out was smooth and staff were friendly. Hallways were narrow and was afraid to use the lift which had several metal doors and was cramped. Multiple heavy fire doors and steps made it difficult to carry luggage through the hallway. Room and bed were small and below average. The bar was overly lit for the time of night and did not have much character.

Tired hotel but OK for price

Posted Oct 10, 2017
Pros: Location is good, breakfasts were enjoyable
Cons: The hotel needs a makeover and to be updated. A continental breakfast offering is desirable
Location: Thurso is a nice town with good amenities + the Scrabster ferry. The golf at Thurso, Reay and Wick is interesting. John O Groats is worth a visit
The Royal has seen much better days, there are signs of a grandeur that was there once. The bar and dining room are unappealing and the room has seen better times although comfortable and clean enough. Now the hotel seems to rely on budget coach tour trade and standards fit with this sort of guest turnover. Our room had a horrible electric shower which had good water pressure when too cold but dribbled as soon as the temperature was raised. There was also the frustration of having nowhere to put soap or shower gel other than the shower tray. The bathroom was in dire need of a refit. Breakfasts were good and as long as you don't want to stay in the hotel for long periods the facilities are adequate. I would only pay a discounted rate for the level of comfort, the base room rates are too high.

Older hotel one night stay

Posted Oct 9, 2017
Pros: Clean and comfortable
Cons: More parking
Location: N/a very brief stay
We only stayed one night and left early the next morning so didnt spend a lot of time in the hotel. The staff were all very friendly, we had dinner in the bar and that was enjoyable. Breakfast was included, not many choices but ok. This is an older style hotel, not much parking is provided.

Central Location

Old Building, well used especially by coach parties. Saying that the room was big, clean, well laid out, large bathroom, tea/coffee facilities, good substantial breakfast and most importantly a comfy bed. I believe the hotel has recently changed hands a due to be refurbished at the end of the season.

convenient only

Posted Sep 20, 2017
Pros: The staff were pleasant.
Cons: A total refurbishment
Location: N/A this time
The convenience of Hotel to Railway station is all I can say about this Hotel. Breakfast was chaotic, but cooked food was good - general service made better by understanding, kind staff.

Good Value for overnight stopover

Posted Sep 18, 2017
Pros: Central location and the staff.
Cons: In need of modernisation.
Location: Thurso Ok for a short stop. We were doing the NC 500 and Thurso was en route. Not there long enough to comment on things to do in the area.
Hotel has seen better days and is in need of renovation and modernisation. However, the room although small was clean and fairly comfortable. Shower worked well and room had flat screen TV. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Faulty Towers

Posted Sep 14, 2017
Pros: Central location
Cons: Most things
Trickle of hot water from shower, waiter forgot porridge, then forgot cooked breakfast, trapped in the lift. Double charged for room. Reception knew about shower problem. We certainly laughed a lot, thought we were at faulty towers.
