While the kids play games, watch films and engage with interactive displays to learn about two contrasting parts of local history.

Tower Museum is a fascinating site that offers panoramic views of the city center. It contains two permanent exhibits telling the story of Derry and a shipwreck from the Spanish Armada. Browse through the interactive displays for an entertaining way of learning about the region.

This restored castle is a blend of medieval stone with modern panels. Appreciate the mix of old and new with modern displays in such an old building. Climb to the top floor of the structure to reach its viewing platform. The vista of central Derry includes Guildhall, the River Foyle and the rural Waterside area on the eastern flank of the stream.

Visit the Story of Derry exhibit to find out about how the city has changed over the centuries. The display starts from the region’s prehistoric and geological beginnings up to the 20th century unionist and nationalist divide and the Derry of present day. Watch audiovisual displays that present a colorful and entertaining look at the city in which you stand.

Peruse the exhibits of An Armada Shipwreck—La Trinidad Valencera for information about the boat that sank off the nearby Donegal Coast in 1588. Divers discovered the vessel, which was among the largest in the Armada Fleet, in 1971. Use the displays to imagine life aboard a 16th-century ship. Take the young ones to the kids’ section, where games, quizzes and a laboratory make science fun. Find out about the deeper context behind the Spanish Armada.

Visit the various temporary exhibits about the region. An information guide is available.

The museum is inside a castle-like structure called Union Hall and opens daily from morning until late afternoon. There is an entry fee for adults, with discounts for kids and groups.

Tower Museum is near the Peace Bridge on the western Cityside bank of the River Foyle. It is within the Derry City Walls. Visit the nearby city highlight of Guildhall, which is several blocks northeast of the Diamond. Parking is available on site at the museum.
