"Beautifully romantic...."
This hotel is truly the closest thing to actually stepping back in time and staying in someone's home. It's two 1834 townhomes joined together in the most beautiful of ways. From the lack of signage (because no one has a sign on their front door, right?) to the sweeping staircases inside, this hotel is unique in so many ways. Lady Mendl's Tea Salon is perfectly amazing and could not be more suited for the "dining area" in such an incredible space. The room space is massive considering you're in NYC....and the old-fashioned key adds another element of charm. However, because the rooms are with wood floors and high ceilings, they are very noisy. Every movement from the people on the 3rd floor above us could be heard as if they were in our room. We will definitely plan on returning, but will request a room on the 3rd floor and in the back. This hotel is truly "a find"!!!!

"Gorgeous Hotel!"
Remember! This is NYC and rooms are generally small. That being said, this hotel is sheer elegance! The nicest staff, so accommodating. It was built in 1925 and they have maintained that elegance throughout. We've stayed in many hotels in NYC and I don't know how we missed this one. It is our new "home" when we travel to NYC.

"Very good location, rooms of very good standard "
Pretty much all about this hotel is good - room is nicely decorated, facilities good, comfortable beds, excellent location. The only criticism I would have is (for our room at least) the noise from the generators at the back of the hotel. I was in room 614 and on a couple of nights struggled to sleep. Initially I thought it was being caused by the airconditioner in the room until I turned it off and the noise continued. The 'engine' noise was persistent and even with earplugs it seeped through. I called reception at 1am to see if they could turn them down or off or something as they were making a high pitched sound. Unfortunately, all they could do is offer me earplugs - and though they said they'd leave a note for the manager, nobody called us back. We probably could have been more pushy but we were nearing the end of our trip and were so exhausted it didn't seem worth it. The windows in these rooms are not double glazed - and that is part of the issue. Seems there is such a simple fix I'm not sure why they don't use it.

Helpful staff, great location. Heating / air con system was too noisy in the rooms. No tea or coffee facilities in the room, although you can order room service for a mere $7

Pocket Guide: Union Square, New York Luxury Hotels

George Washington marks the midpoint of Union Square, a well-groomed park that offers respite from Manhattan's masses. Known for its weekly Greenmarket, which unites foodies with farmers, the park is surrounded by a vibrant neighborhood of shops and restaurants and is convenient to Greenwich Village and downtown to the south. Just north stands one of New York City's iconic buildings, the Flatiron.
