Explore Chileā€™s oldest public university and enjoy free concerts and cultural events at this historic educational institution.

Visit University of Santiago-Chile (Universidad de Santiago de Chile) for interesting insight into the student and cultural life of one of Chileā€™s largest universities. View historic buildings, attend free cultural events and see Chileā€™s only planetarium. The university opened in 1849 as the Escuela de Artes y Oficios (School of Arts and Crafts) and it has since grown to become one of Chileā€™s most important educational institutions.

Wander the grounds of the university campus and look for the Escuela de Artes y Oficios, a national historic monument built in 1885. Sit on a bench in the Patio de los HĆ©roes (Patio of Heroes) and observe students passing by. Head to the universityā€™s planetarium to watch audiovisual presentations in a domed cinema and discover interactive science exhibitions.

Throughout the year, the university presents a busy schedule of concerts, lectures, theater productions and workshops. Check upcoming schedules to see what events are taking place during your visit. Among the highlights of the annual program are the performances by the University Orchestra, the Syntagma Musicum baroque group and the choirs of Madrigalista and Coro Universidad de Santiago. To see where these events take place, seek out Aula Magna, a superb concert hall located within the Escuela de Artes y Oficios.

The University of Santiago-Chile is about a 10-minute drive west from Plaza de Armas. Take public buses or the metro for easy access to the university. The EstaciĆ³n Central and Universidad de Santiago metro stations are both less than a 10-minute walk away. If arriving at the Universidad de Santiago station, be sure to check out the murals by Alberto Ludwig, which depict the universityā€™s history.

While in the area, you might also want to stroll around the picturesque Parque Quinta Normal (Quinta Normal Park). It is home to tree-shaded lawns, ponds and three museums, including the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural (National Museum of Natural History).

Entrance to University of Santiago-Chile is free, but there is an admission fee for the planetarium. Opening hours vary, so be sure to check the website before your visit.
