Charming Hotel, Miniscule Room

Posted Jan 18, 2018
We didn't ask for it, but were given economy room. My spouse and I barely had enough room to get around the bed. The cost was the same as a very spacious, centrally located room in Santiago. The hotel is lovely; the staff was very helpful--but the room was too small. Also there was little hot water. I'd recommend the hotel but warn guests not to take the economy room.

Great location

Posted Dec 30, 2017
Like everything in Valparaiso the style of the Gran Hotel Gervasoni is dictated by the topography of the town. You can’t scratch yourself without having to climb a staircase, and because everything is both Victorian and terraced onto a hillside it is small. Once you adjust to this, it’s lovely. beautiful timbers & tiling, lovely & clean, nice sheets & towels and even a complimentary pisco sour. Should have eaten here, but didn’t. Also Daniela (one of the reception managers) was really great. Stay here.

Wonderfully quirky hotel in Valparaiso

Posted Dec 12, 2017
Pros: Lovely restored former mansion up the hills from downtown Valparaiso. We had a great view of city and harbor from our room. Helpful staff.
Cons: The entrance to the building is a bit obscure; it took us several minutes to find it after leaving our taxi.
Location: Be aware that taxi is the only way to get to the hotel with luggage--it is up a steep hillside. To go anywhere be prepared to climb up and down.
We stayed for 2 nights. while on a trip to Argentina and Chile. We enjoyed our stay and recommend it highly.

Classic historic hotel

Posted Dec 8, 2017
Pros: Historic, classic style and decor. Nice bar area with outside seating. Beautiful view of the city and harbour from our room. Very helpful staff.
Cons: Hot water was spotty. We were on the top floor and the hot water tank was in the basement. Took a long time to get even moderately warm water.
Location: Located on a hill (typical of Valparaiso) with a nice view of the city. Within walking distance of excellent restaurants and a funicular.
This is a classic hotel with lots of history. It does not have all the amenities of a modern hotel (such as an elevator) but the age and decor add to the ambience. Friendly staff are more than willing to carry your luggage upstairs.

Ok hotel

Posted Nov 27, 2017
If your room is on the second floor you will need to walk up steep steps (rise is ok but the run is very short). Staff at reception willingly bright our very heavy bags up for us but we had to bring them down. No parking at the hotel and on-street parking is very scarce.

Thank you so much for your feedback. We are trying to improve our service every day. Since we are in an old building we have a lot of stairs and an on-street parking are the only solutions while we invest in major build solutions. Thanks again for your feedback

Great view to the port

Posted Aug 24, 2017
Pros: Location, view and facilities
Cons: Breakfast
Location: Best location, walking-distance to main attractions in Cerro Alegre
This place is a classic in Valparaiso, the facilities are really good and the rooms in general are very comfortable. My only advice is to improve the breakfast options, it's way too basic and not at the level of the rest of the hotel.

Warm historic stay in Valparaiso

Posted Jul 2, 2017 on Hotels
It's an old building for sure, and it creaks and looks worn- but it is well cared for by the management crew! It's clean, warm, great hot water showers with modern toilet facilities, new comfy beds, good breakfast and friendly staff who go out of their way to help you. Best of all, the location in the centre of Cerro Concepcion means you're just a short walking distance to most things. Relish a stay in a building with history.

Sad Decay. New Management Required

Posted Jun 26, 2017 on Hotels
The hotel is run down. No love for it. Pay at check in ? Never seen it before. No detail of the check. Staff knows nothing. Working material in sight all around. It has the location and potential. New management urgently required. Otherwise this won't last for long

An old mansion facing the Pacific

Posted Mar 27, 2017
Pros: The sights and the style of the building
Cons: A better service to the customers.
Location: It is fine to walk down the stairs to go downtown. The boat ride at the port is a must.
Staying at the Gervasoni is an opportunity to live the experience of a writer from the Nineteenth Century. The location is magnificaent with a stunning and poetic view of the Valparaiso Bay. One may think about Melville's novels, Flora Tristan's voyage from Bordeaux, many vessels from England going north to San Francisco 150 years ago. From the comfort point of view the hotel is only fair, but it's worth the stay.
