Great view to the port

Posted Aug 24, 2017
Pros: Location, view and facilities
Cons: Breakfast
Location: Best location, walking-distance to main attractions in Cerro Alegre
This place is a classic in Valparaiso, the facilities are really good and the rooms in general are very comfortable. My only advice is to improve the breakfast options, it's way too basic and not at the level of the rest of the hotel.

An old mansion facing the Pacific

Posted Mar 27, 2017
Pros: The sights and the style of the building
Cons: A better service to the customers.
Location: It is fine to walk down the stairs to go downtown. The boat ride at the port is a must.
Staying at the Gervasoni is an opportunity to live the experience of a writer from the Nineteenth Century. The location is magnificaent with a stunning and poetic view of the Valparaiso Bay. One may think about Melville's novels, Flora Tristan's voyage from Bordeaux, many vessels from England going north to San Francisco 150 years ago. From the comfort point of view the hotel is only fair, but it's worth the stay.

The best place to stay for the real Valparaiso

Posted Mar 22, 2017 on Hotels
This is a unique hotel, charming with a ton of character, located in an awesome area. One of the clerks, Ricardo, was great - the other guy not so much. The rooftop terrace is great for drinks and a view, the buffet breakfast was pretty good. Our room did not get cleaned, because they did not have another key. There is no elevator, and the stairs are very steep and narrow, but Ricardo carried our suitcases for us and that was a huge help. We would definitely stay here again.

They don't have A/C.

Posted Feb 23, 2017 on Orbitz
I booked this hotel because it had good reviews and offered air conditioning. My husband sleeps warm and needs to have a cool room. When we checked in we were told the A/C was broken, however there was no unit in the room. When we asked the gentleman at the front desk, he said it's cool at night. We asked for him to call the manager and he did only to tell us that she said only 3 rooms have A/C but none worked well. Overall the hotel was clean and in a good location, but don't advertise what you don't have. Also, why is your manager not there at 5pm?

Grand old hotel in a bohemian neighborhood

Posted Feb 20, 2017
Pros: Location, old-style character, breakfast buffet, evening drinks & tapas, "welcome drink," very helpful staff, near funiculars.
Cons: Plumbing is adequate but could be better. One night was 'bongo night' nearby interrupting sleep at 3am. Not sure what hotel can do. :(
Location: The happening/hipster place for Valparaiso. Restaurants and artists galore. May need to walk up-and-down steps from place-to-place.
The hotel (and the neighborhood) appears to be transitioning from an old to a bohemian type of neighborhood. Area is chock full of excellent restaurants, viewing areas, artist shops and galleries, and accessible by funiculars! Definitely the area to stay in Valparaiso. The hotel itself while is well placed and is a bit worn but that can be its charm or its deficiency--depending on your point-of-view. Breakfast buffet is more than adequate, evening drinks and tapas also very good and convenient if you don't feel like venturing out. The Pasta e Vino restaurant is in the same building of the hotel, read great reviews but didn't try it. Other great restaurants are within easy walking distance. We had to get the right combo of internet network and password before getting success--need patience for this. Staff is overall very courteous (like much of South America) and they will try to help you in most regards. Overall recommended but don't expect a new (say) Hilton hotel with all modern conveniences.

Authentic & Rustic

Posted Jan 21, 2017 on Hotels
Great location & beautiful building. Room clean. Excellent service & good breakfast but go early before food runs out. But halls & furniture dusty & dirty. Chandeliers all needed to be cleaned. Bed old, throw pillows on bed needed to be cleaned. Not generous with asking for ice.
