Lovely hotel in tranquil location

Posted Feb 7, 2017
Pros: Apart from the sound of local dogs barking, goats bleating, and birds singing, there is complete silence. It is completely peaceful and serene.
Cons: Given the remote location, wifi is slow, and quickly overwhelmed when a couple of guests try to use it simultaneously.
Location: The nearest town (San Mateo) is a 25-min walk downhill - and a EUR6 cab-ride back if you have enjoyed a meal at one of the many eateries there.
As the name implies, Rural Hotel Las Calas is a small hotel with just 9 bedrooms in the middle of nowhere. Whether this is a good thing depends on the individual guest! The rooms are large and comfortable; either in the main building, or among the gardens - which are beautifully tended. The staff were consistently excellent, and the food was homely and pleasant. With few guests to support more staff, there is no staffed bar, although there are communal areas where you can enjoy sundowners if you buy drinks elsewhere.

Peaceful situation within reach of hiking trails.

Posted Dec 6, 2016
Pros: Individuality and peace.
Cons: Dinner was a set menu and it would be nice to be offered a couple of options in advance. Improve internet connection and offer for the fire to be lit.
Location: Situated in a valley in a very small village 10 minutes drive from San Mateo. Tranquil location.
Small hotel with lots of character and good facilities. Helpful staff. We stayed in December and whilst it is understandable not to light a fire in the living area it would be nice if guests were asked if they would like the fire to be lit and the comfy room would be more used and sociable. Sharing a table at dinner may not be everyone's taste but we found if a pleasant experience to chat to fellow guests in the evening. We were unable to access the internet.

Timeless piece of paradise

Posted Jan 4, 2016
Pros: Staff, Breakfast, Decor, Amenities, Silence, the owner's dog Frieda
Cons: The parking lot is a bit tight:)
Location: 10' drive to San Mateo for restaurants and stores 45' drive to most beaches / Las Palmas / Maspalomas Starting point for many hiking trails
Lost in time and space, this hotel is a peaceful haven where the staff will cater for your every needs in a manner rarely seen these days.

Location on Expedia

Posted Nov 24, 2013
Pros: It was good
This hotel was booked for it's closeness to the airport.! Expedia said it was just less than 11 miles from the Airport. The trouble with this distance was we reckon it was an "as the crow flies" distance which was rather misleading. It took nearly an hour for the taxi to drive to the hotel from the Airport and cost many euros.

Not what we expected

Posted Apr 19, 2009
We expected a relaxing hotel in nice country surroundings, however this hotel was no more than an average B&B with very little to do in the surrounding area. The rooms and gardens were not as pretty as they looked in the photos and the food was basic. Alright for an overnight stay if you are on a walking trip but not for a long holiday.

Nice but quiet place for a walking holiday base

Posted Apr 1, 2009
The hotel is unusual and an interesting place to stay. The staff were friendly and helpful. It has beautiful views of the mountains - great to look at as you eat breakfast. However, the village is some way from the nearest town - San Mateo. So strolling out for an evening meal is not an easy option. You can eat in but the food is rather pricey for what you get. Great base for a walking holiday but a car, if not essential, is pretty handy to get you out and about. Get a map locating the hotel before you go. It wasn't easy to find in the dark. We were there at the end of March. Be aware that it is fairly cool at this altitude - probably 10 degrees less than at the coast. Up at the top of the mountains it was about 4C.

small oasis

Our room was comfortable with plenty of hot water. Well situated for the mountain scenery of Grand Canary. 1.times of meals will not suit everyone. Breakfast 9 to 11, dinner at dusk. 2.we were never told the cost of dinner.if your spanish is not good you will be unable to ask. 3.breakfast was a good cold buffet, but there was no choice at dinner and no info in advance about the food unless you were able to ask. Dinner was simple,eg. soup,a casserole and dessert, say, ice cream. We found the dinners tasty. 4.For dinner, it was necessary to book by no later than breakfast on the relevant day.It was not always easy to find other places to eat if you failed to do so. 2 bars serving food within walking distance and other restaurants within 10 mins. drive, but no info. about when these were open. 5.little info. at hotel about the area and facilities. It proved difficult to find this elsewhere in late Feb 6.Although there was a sitting room for guests the bar was never open and it was not an appealing place to sit after dinner. The quibbles were minor issues for us. A small, quiet, comfortable rural hotel run by friendly people. Good base for exploring the amazing landscape.

could be so good, but .....

Posted Feb 5, 2006
This hotel is really lovely but it is up at 1000m & and the rooms can be very cold due to a reluctance to put on the heating during winter months; the beds therefore feel damp if the room has not been used for a while and need airing before guests arrive. When you have been there 24hrs it soon warms up. The 'salon' has heating and a fire - unfortunately guests have to turn up the radiator and light the fire so it's not very inviting. The hotel must be wonderful in warmer weather but as a location for a winter break the owner is missing a great opportunity...... Quite a few guests told her so this last week and she accepted the criticism and promised to do better.

Hotell uppe i bergen

Posted Jan 16, 2015
