Book a visit with Paisha to taste some of the finest Pinot and blends in Walla. She's laid back, extremely knowledgable and will spend an hour with you in the tasting room and take you on a tour of winery operations. The Estate Red is the best I tried on the tour. We took some home for a special occasion. One of the oldest mansions in Walla Walla, this house was built around 1880 and now serves as a museum depicting daily Victorian life on the frontier.
From the website:
When built, the Kirkman’s home was one of the grandest residences in Walla Walla reflecting tastes of the day and wealth generated by the ranching business. Now the Victorian Italianate house remains the only example of its kind locally, though vestiges of early 20th century architecture can be found throughout Walla Walla.
In its heyday, the house was the setting for lavish entertaining, as well as for routine activities of daily American Victorian life. In addition to being home for the Kirkman’s, it also served as a boys’ dormitory for Whitman College from 1920-1924. During this time Walter Brattain, 1956 Nobel Prize winner for the co-invention of the transistor, studied in the home. The house was elected to the National Historic Register in December of 1974 and has been run as a non-profit organization since 1981. If you're in Walla Walla you can take a break from wineries and vineyards and drive through the farms and wheat fields just outside of the city. The Liberty Theater opened in 1917 (originally named the American Theater) with a design based on traditional Dutch architecture, including creamy terra cotta tiles covering the facade. Inside, marble and tile filled the lobby, while each of the theater's 1000 seats were crafted of mahogany and Spanish leather. The theater itself was a technical marvel, with two projection machines, a $10,000 heating and ventilation system, and a $25,000 organ (the movies themselves were silent).
Today, the theater exists as an extension of the Macy's department store. Apparently the original seats remain, hidden beneath a false floor. Strawberry flatbread for dessert. Local strawberries were in season. Simple, yet delicious. The jalepeno margarita. Fresh, spicy, not-too-sweet way to get back in the game after a wine tasting marathon. Enjoyed the best meal in a long time here. Beautiful interior. Don't miss this place. Middle eastern flavors come alive in this delicately seasoned grilled pork shoulder served on a skewer. The sides were impeccable paired - harissa, cilantro, carrot purée, and spring veggies. The menu here rotates with the seasons, but chances are you'll leave happy regardless of your order. Best duck I've ever had, and I order the duck everywhere. Wonderfully seasoned and succulent. Served with a side of duck egg salad. I won't be forgetting this anytime soon! The annual Walla Walla Balloon Stampede. Daily 6:30 am launches. Crispy fried Walla Walla sweet onions. Puts the Blooming Onion and Awesome Blossom to shame. The onions here are sliced paper thin with a mandoline, tossed in a light flour batter (with a hint of cayenne), sifted of excess batter, and then fried. The result is so delicate it nearly melts in your mouth. Beautiful morning in Pioneer Park. Established in 1902, it is Walla Walla's oldest park. Enjoy outdoor concerts performed in the bandstand, and watch the squirrels at play as you sit under the canopy of the 100+ year old giant sycamore trees. Best place for a girls weekend, smooth road riding, great restaurants and wine tastings! Sweet onion sausage - that's the ticket at this walk up window in downtown Walla Walla. Grilled fresh and served on locally baked buns, you won't regret stopping by for a bite. Only open for lunch. This gluten-free pizza didn't get to have a long life. ;) They also sell pizza by the slice, but I don't think they do GF slices. The house salad was also great. #glutenfree Driftwood Horse near Whitman College's Penrose Library Nice range of Syrah here. We chose the milbrandt to add to our bottle trove. The dogs at this winery are hilarious too. Quick, tasty and fun place for a snack. Different flavors every day, so no two visits are the same. Keeping dentists in business since 1934, Bright's is your classic one stop sweet shop - ice cream, chocolates, hard candies, caramel corn, candied nuts, fudge and more. Open late in the summer, just case your dinner spot's dessert menu doesn't cut it. Lovely restaurant located in a recently restored 100yo lumber mill. The red fir floorboards, some up to 30ft long (9m), were the original floor joists, while the massive boiler face at the entry originally fronted a 5ft (1.5m) diameter boiler with a 72ft tall (22m) smokestack that powered an Atlas Engine Works steam engine. This engine drove 312ft (95m) of overhead shafts that powered all of the mill's machinery.
Today, the restaurant serves up locally sourced food and wine in a light and airy dining room. Reservations are advised. Aussie Lot burger - 1/3lb hand-pattied burger, fried egg, shredded beets, Tillamook cheddar, thick-cut bacon, red leaf lettuce, tomato and sweet onion. Yeah, it's all that, but I'm a wuss - I resorted to a fork and knife.
Green Spoon is the perfect everyday food joint in Walla Walla - nothing fancy, but everything is done right, including burgers, salads, soups, rice bowls, tacos and a few assorted entrees. For us, it was a pleasant escape from the previously heady meals at Saffron and Whitehouse Crawford. Unpretentious, but fairly run-of-the-mill wine tasting experience. All the wineries out here by the airport are located in WWII era facilities, and Dunham is no exception, having set up shop in a maintenance hangar. Consequently, they have a large tasting room (with a nice selection of wine accessories) and a grand party room that they use for tasting parties and private events. As for the wine itself, we quite enjoyed the tasting. We tried six different wines, and our favorite was the crisp, unoaked Chardonnay (possibly because it was 90F out). The cherry gazpacho was completely unique and delicious, blended with cucumber, sweet onions, chilies, and bread (as a thickener). Yum! The menu is seasonal, so you might end up with something different, but I'll bet it's just a good! Goat cheese and ricotta gnocchi, served with lamb ragu and fire roasted peppers. I was a bit worried that the goat cheese in the gnocchi would overpower the dish, but have no fear, the rich ragu balanced it to perfection. Beautiful dining room in old mill. Fantastic cooking here. Pioneer Park. #Green Serving burgers and shakes for 60 years now. Everything is made to order, so you can't really call it fast food. We haven't tried the burgers yet, but the milkshakes are the best way to beat the heat in Walla Walla. Dozens of flavors - I tried the lime as well as the cherry and both were thick and tasty. Love wine photos and Walla Walla wines! #Patterns Faber, Faber...😎 Last wine stop for the day - Seven Hills 🍷 Thin crust pizza by the slice makes this a great lunch option in town, especially if you are over-consuming at dinner like we are. Tasty standards like pepperoni and margherita are available, as are a number of interesting and unique flavors. Whole pies also available. Blue Mountains. #Green Wildwood Park. #Green Blue Mountains. #Green Walla Walla Sweet Onions are the best in the world! #FoodieFinds Walla Walla is one of the best small towns in the world and has the best wine! #WallaWalla #EndlessSummer Downtown, Walla Walla, Washington! #Festival
