We spent a night at the The Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa which we thoroughly enjoyed.
Our room/suite in the Courtyard was lovely, spacious and with its own small garden and private hot-tub. The standard of décor was excellent, and the room and bathroom very clean and well maintained. A few quirks worth noting; no in-room safe or minibar; and no air-conditioning, although a fan was provided (we stayed in the hottest August in the UK on record and didn’t need to use the fan so not sure the lack of air-conditioning is a major issue).
The hotel is an old country house so lots of interesting features and rooms. The Spa is part of the hotel and worth a mention. There is a very well-equipped gym – best equipment I’ve seen in any hotel – and heated indoor and outdoor pools, and hot-tub. The grounds are fine, without being spectacular and there are plenty of loungers if the weather is good and you want to sunbathe. There are also a steam room and sauna, and one of the most epic shower rooms I’ve come across – loved the ‘tropical storm’ shower setting. There is a full range of treatments and my partner had a very good massage.
We ate in the restaurant after cocktails on the terrace. The food was good although I’d not rate it as ‘haute-cuisine’ dining.
The staff were very helpful.
All-in-all we had a great time and it is a good place for a relaxing short break, especially given its proximity to Longleat and Stourhead.
