On November 8, 2020, we made reservations through Expedia to stay at the Adam’s Inn on January 19 -21, 2020 to attend the Inauguration in Washington DC.
On January 6, 2021, following a rally at the White House, supporters of President Trump marched to the Capital and, in a violent riot, illegally and forcefully entered and occupied the Capital building. Following this violent act, Washington DC Mayor Bowser declared a State of Emergency on that day. The following day, the Mayor issued Order #2021-003 extending the State of Emergency for 15 days through January 21, 2021. In addition, President Trump declared a state of emergency on January 11, 2021 for the Washington DC area due to the riots on January 6th. Following these actions, and as permitted by the declared State of Emergency:
• The governors of Virginia and Maryland issued Do Not Travel orders on January 11, 2021:
Joint Statement from Bowser, Hogan, and Northam on Planning for 59th Presidential Inauguration: …”we are taking the extraordinary step of encouraging Americans not to come to Washington, D.C. and to instead participate virtually.”
• Indoor dining closures set to expire on January 15th were extended through the inauguration date.
• All major Metro stations closed during the week leading up to and through the Inauguration.
• The National Mall closed and Inauguration Parade was canceled.
The State of Emergency and the directives listed above made it impossible to safely travel to Washington DC on the dates
