We needed an room for one night to attend a family occasion nearby - hence we booked The Hickstead. Staff very welcoming & check-in was swift. Our room on the ground floor was in desperate need of updating or at least redecorating. Although reasonably clean the carpet was heavily stained, basin plug was blocked & showered curtain too short ). The room was quite cold & we discovered the radiator in the bay window behind the closed curtains. The ceiling & walls were obviously thin as not only were we disturbed by guests walking around the room above us, but were could also hear them talking (they were not talking loudly!). Breakfast room service was very good & on time. Check-out was swift.

"Lovely grounds, excellent service and great food"
We stayed for a couple of days to enjoy a spa break. It is not a cheap place to stay but we knew that before we went. We didn't have the breakfast included in our room rate and it therefore seemed very steep to pay £15.50 for a bowl of cereal and a croissant! We ate in both the Brasserie and the Restaurant and found the food and service in both excellent. The spa we found quite noisy - not from the people in it necessarily but the echoing nature of the space and the fountains that were quite loud. The outdoor hot tub and sauna were a treat, we had them to ourselves! We were really disappointed that the steam room and sauna facilities were in each individual changing room and my partner and I could not therefore do that together. The room was large and the bed really comfortable. Especially nice to have different teas on offer. The shower was underwhelming, expected better in a junior suite but the bathroom was enormous and well equipped.

A good standard, although attention to detail maintenance let it down, for example the shower dripped continuously and the grouting in the bathroom was dirty in places and missing in others.
Staff very helpful, pleasant and efficient.
I was surprised that they were only able to offer a table for a resident in the dining room at 9-00pm, too late for me and the bar food although good was expensive for what was on offer. Early evening on a Saturday the bar staff were almost non-exisitent, and when they appeared were slow to serve, although this improved after 6-00pm.
The booking system with expedia does not allow a choice of B&B or Half board, which we would have preferred.

As the only guests we found space in the small car park - but space elsewhere was excellent. The bedroom was full of classy furniture and en suite was a state of the art bathroom with jacuzzi. The garden with pool and downs beyond was exquisite - enjoyed tea on the terrace.
Slept well and faced great breakfasts that merited the time in preparation.
Would go again for a luxury experience
