A wonderful, beautifully restored property. Everything about our room was comfortable, considered and clean, everyone was so friendly, and the food was exceptional. Breakfast was a particularly highlight! We were totally happy with every part of our short stay at Schoone Oordt and would unreservedly recommend booking.

Charming Hotel
Sadly only had one night here en route, wonderful, quirky, charming hotel. Wonderful warm welcome from the staff, really well looked after, the restaurant is fabulous, superb quality meal and the breakfast was amazing. They even washed our car, highly recommend

We stayed at Schoone Oordt during July and rented 3 rooms for our travel party. We arrived in the late afternoon, only to find that there was load shedding underway, and the resort had made no provision of inverters or generators for our rooms. So our first experience of our rooms was dark, cold and gloomy. Trying to unpack and get set up in our rooms while stumbling around in the dark was no fun. Overall, we only had power about half the time we at the resort. There was no disclosure when we made the booking that the resort had no electricity backup, and we assumed that since load shedding has been ongoing for years, that such provision would have been made at a resort of this calibre. Additionally, one of the rooms had a broken wall heater that didn't function when the electricity came back on and so the occupants were freezing throughout the night. The only saving grace was that all the staff were super nice, and the breakfast was wonderful. Overall though, we had had high expectations, but it was a very disappointing experience at a resort that charges a premium rate. Buyer beware...

Hello DanieThis is such terrible news. Thank you for your feedback and we apologise profusely. We have placed our orders for batteries & invertors and they are due for installation next month. Up until this point, we have not had the resources to do so as we had tried our best to survive Covid. We have battery lights and fireplaces in the rooms and the fires should have been lit so that your rooms were warm when you arrived. Once again, our deepest apologies for your uncomfortable experience. I hope that you will give us a chance to make it up to you next time.

Schoone Oordt Country House
We had an awesome time. The town and your lodge are stunning. I have driven past Swellendam maybe 30 times in the last 7 years since I moved to Knysna. Never once had I ever turned off the N2 and driven through Swellendam. We ended up spending a small fortune at one of your local art galleries. And the restaurant where we had dinner (Drostdy) was excellent!

Our stay far exceeded our expectations. The service was truly exceptional, and we loved every single detail. The beds were comfortable, grounds are beautiful, breakfast was delicious, check-in experience was lovely, and we also joined for dinner which had a great ambience. Given load shedding schedules there were also thoughtful details such as battery powered lights in the rooms. Would highly recommend a stay here and we hope to return again soon!

Felt like family! Very accomodating
Great family stay! The food was great, and very accomodating as we had vegans, vegetarians and lactose free guests in the family to deal with. They brought wonderful floaty toys to the pool for the kids and made our stay really relaxing and nice. The staff was so nice it was as if we had been friends forever.

Comfortable, relaxing and exceptional service.
We enjoyed an amaizing weekend with our every need taken care off by Alison and her team! They left no stone unturned to make it enjoyable and we made the most of the garden and Richards' beautiful koi ponds. We did not even explore the town much and rather opted to stay at the establishments comfort and relaxing environment. All the staff were helpful, friendly and respected our privacy. Truly felt welcomed even though a number of guests turned up at the same time . The property is stunning , the gardens are beautiful and the pool was a joy . Room had everything you could need . Breakfasts and evening meals were an absolute treat . Truly good food well presented . All the staff were friendly. If anywhere deserves a five star rating this is it.

Excellent hospitality!
The staff is so accommodating, they'll do anything to ensure you have a good stay. We were the only ones staying that night (off season) and we literally had the entire staff looking after us, setting up our fireplace, leaving warm bottles, offering snacks, making dinner reservations, washing our car, etc. etc. Highly recommended place to stay as part of the garden route!

Do believe the hype!
Once you stay at Schoone Oordt it gives you a huge problem reviewing other hotels: there might be nothing wrong with them but you know you can't give them a perfect score once you have experienced the hospitality at Schoone Oordt. Just one of the details which made me smile during my stay was the hot water bottle sneaked into the bed at turn-down on a chilly winter evening. S.O. is a family run business and one key factor in its success is the way the staff all seem to feel they are part of a family, and nothing was ever a trouble for them... it was always 'my pleasure'. The room and bathroom were both homely and tasteful to the extent that I would be happy to transport both to my house. The shower was particularly impressive. A welcome drink, afternoon tea and cake laid out every day, pleasant and well-tended gardens, relaxing pool area, a fantastic three course breakfast which changed daily, your car washed every morning... just what else do you want? In fact you probably get it but I am running out of review space. The hotel also serves dinner which although not prefect (my lavender infused creme brulee wasn't properly set) served up an exquisite fillet steak which was a highlight of my month in South Africa. Needless to say, if I am ever within 100km of Swellendam again I will be looking to stay at Schoone Oordt: it's an exceptional hotel.

A wonderful night stop
We stopped in Swellendam for a night whilst driving the garden route. Service here was impeccable, food was excellent, and the prices in the hotel were extremely reasonable. Loved the hote, and loved the staff. If we had to find any criticism that would be perhaps it’s time to replace the CD player in the honeymoon suit for something more modern.

Proudly South African!
Ian and Alison treats their geusts in such a manor that you would think they are the owners of the business. We have never had an experience like this before. From the moment we arrived until we drove out the gates with a clean washed car. The dining was on another level and the breakfast from another planet. The room was spacious,minimalistic and stylishly furnished. The linen was crispy and fresh and the bathroom big,clean and fresh. Very good value for money and a lasted good memory.

A step back in time at a gorgeous hideaway
This hotel oozes charm from the moment you arrive. Every detail in the main house and rooms is perfectly crafted, from the decor to the chocolates left in your room at turndown with an accompanying note about tomorrow's weather forecast. The owners have taken a huge amount of care to ensure that the service you receive for your stay is flawless.

We would recommend Schoone Oordt highly.
We found Schoone Oordt to be delightful, and the room spacious and spotlessly clean. The staff couldn't have been pleasanter or more helpful. We had one of our two Swellendam dinners in, and should have had both in because our meal at Schoone Oordt was marvellous. Excellent chef. Add to that, his breakfasts were wonderful too - imaginative and different each day. One could have a boring old "full English" or scrambled, or omelette etc if one wanted, but the day's "chef's special breakfast" has to be highly recommended. Tea/ coffee and delicious home made cake, crunchie biscuits & rusks were on offer and complementary at any time in the afternoon. All in all it was a great couple of days and Schoone Oordt is highly recommended.

Very welcoming
Stopped off for one night en route from Knysna to Cape Town. Once we found the right gate - on the main road - the welcome was very warm and efficient. We were given tea and booked in, then chose a local restaurant for the evening with their advice and they booked it. Room was very pleasant, though short on wardrobe space for a longer stay. In the morning we went for a swim and had breakfast before continuing our journey.

WOW Stay
Pleasant one night stay enroute to George from Cape town. Perfect half way stop to break the journey.Very pleasant and professional welcome from Sunette. Accommodation met all our expectations, dinner was exceptional, thanks to Wander for his special touch to the cuisine that was prepared and served. The Breakfast was wow!!! We will return.
