"A good location for seeing the city and cathedral"
The hotel is a modern building but beginning to show its age. There seem to be few rooms with assisted bathrooms, unless we were unlucky in not securing one at the time of booking. Our stay was very pleasant though. We have visited Winchester several times a year for the past twenty-five or so and The Wessex has been our hotel of choice for many of them. Our idea is to get a break from grinding routine and being at everyone's beck and call. It's not far from home but satisfies us enormously. Three nights is just enough and economic. The city is compact and even a little quaint. Frightfully English! Not much alteration to buildings or development would be permitted. The cathedral is an architectural masterpiece and interesting for all religions and none. People are really friendly in Winchester and especially polite and helpful in the shops, etc.We rely on all this and it never lets us down.

Pocket Guide: Winchester Winchester Accor Hotels

The ancient capital of England, and once the seat of King Alfred, historic Winchester is famous for its magnificent cathedral begun in 1079, and venerable Winchester College founded in 1382. The picturesque area around the Cathedral Green has changed little over the centuries, and offers good places to eat, drink and shop. A short walk across the water meadows, the 12th-century Hospital of St Cross is England’s most perfectly preserved almshouse.
