great staff, hotel...not so much

We stayed here to be away from the hustle and bustle of Stone Town - there is absolutely nothing else nearby -, but the hotel pool was crowded with local children in the afternoon with a DJ blasting music. A shuttle service was provided to Stone Town but the return was no later than 5 pm. A 1.5 l bottle of water cost 5,000 shillings (captive market). Finally, we never had truly hot water in our shower. On the positive side, the staff were absolutely wonderful and the buffet dinner (30,000 shillings) had different live entertainment shows every evening. The last two positives almost make up for the negatives, but not quite.

Close to airport but that's not a good thing

Hotel is run down. The landscaping has not been maintained, the rooms need to be painted and bathrooms need complete renovation. There isn't a beach and there were only 10 lawn chairs around the pool. The pool bar was never attended and the indoor bar was missing vodka and tequila. The bartenders didn't even know how to make basic drinks. During one outdoor dinner buffet my daughter ended up with 107 bug bites on her legs. The hotel is surrounded by a high wall and that is probably a good thing, not an area I would walk around in the dark. Speaking of dark, the power went out one night in our block of rooms. We ended up checking out early.

Rude staff, rundown rooms

This was just a generally tacky "resort," with really no beach access, so don't be fooled by the name. The worst part of the stay was the service, which ranged from apathetic to downright rude. That said, we hopped all over Zanzibar for a week and found this to be the case pretty much universally. Also, the a/c technically worked (we could hear it running) but it did not cool the room at all. Hot water in the shower was hit or miss. The front desk staff also seemed unfamiliar with Expedia and it was a battle to "prove" that we had paid for our room. The best part of the stay at Zanzibar Beach Resort was the food, which was surprisingly good.

Cons: Getting to and from Stonetown
Location: On a beach, next to a shantytown fishing village
This is very much a resort hotel with entertainment laid on whether you like it or not and evening meals run on a buffet basis. It is in a fantastic location on a beach and has lovely grounds and a beautiful pool. It is a perfect base for exploring Zanzibar and going on excursions. The beach outside is not very swimmable and a bit smelly but it is well worth walking or swimming to the neighbouring fishing village. The downside is that it is a few miles outside Stonetown itself and taxis cost $10 to get there because the hotel insists on booking them for you. They cost 10,000 TSh on the way back, which is about 25 per cent less. The only problem I encountered was that the hotel's management resent their guests booking taxis or outings independently. The only other quibble I would have is that they often played loud 'mambo' music by the pool, but I'm sure the other clients enjoyed it. Overall, a lovely place to stay, despite the wrinkles.

Convenient to Stonetown

Best thing about this hotel was the friendly and helpful staff. The receptionist upgraded us for no charge to a sea view chalet from garden view. The cleaning lady left a towel design on the bed with flowers scattered about every day, then turned down the bed at night. The breakfast was simple but adequate. Dinner was exceptional as part of halfboard booking -- whether a dinner buffet or we ordered off the menu. Note that the dinner buffet quality may have been due to the Christmas holidays. Pool was crowded around Christmas because the hotel allows locals to swim for a fee -- not a problem per se and made for more pool atmosphere, but the music was way too loud. Public beach is not very good due to the very narrow strip of sand, the rocks and barnacles past the sand, and the shallow slope which makes it is very tidal affected. The hotel's pool area would be enhanced if they replaced the rough grass along the area by the sea with soft sand -- since the beach is of poor quality, good sand is needed somewhere. The hotel had two kayaks that we rented for a very reasonable price. There is a small village next to the hotel and the variety of boats and people made for some great pictures. It is best to get the phone numbers of several taxi drivers you can call. The hotel does need to invest in continuing upgrades as some areas are showing a lot of wear and degradation. However, this was an overall a good place to stay as long as you find a 3-1/2 star hotel acceptable.

Location: Sandsynligvis den bedste ferieby på Sanzibar.
Behageligt, afslappet atmosfare og et forbavsende pænt byggeri. Der er flinke og hjælpsomme folk ansat. Beligenheden er i top, med både liv, restauranter, andre hoteller og meget lidt shopping i byen. Stranden og havet er i top. Husk at hotellet har ingen pool, så badning med små børn er vanskelig.

Attention: Tourist Trap!

In general the hotel is quite ok. Particularly the bar and cleaning staff is very kind and helpful. However, there is one really negative point: The hotel offers various tours out of which we took a so called "spice tour" on which flavors and fragrances of spices and fruits were explained on a little farm in a forest. The tour was very nice but at the end a person appeared who asked for an interest fee of 15,000 TS per person to be paid to him. Although the price for the tour was to be paid to the driver who brought us to the farm. Not paying the interest fee collector was not an option. The incident was reported to the hotel but there was no reaction from them. What remains is the strange feeling of being robbed.
