More of a "hostile" than a hotel

When I booked this hotel, it was rated with four stars. When we arrived, its rating had dropped to three. When we left, I would give it no more than two stars, and that would be generous.
We flew to Zurich to begin a long Christmas trip. Rather than go straight to the train, we wanted to relax for a day. Our flight arrived early, and I was assured we could have our room before stated check in time. But then the hotel denied this promise, starting a long fight that Expedia had to resolve.
When we arrived, the woman at the desk was the person who'd been emailing me about early check in. She said she couldnt remember me because she had so many emails every day.
There was no bellman to help with luggage and the elevator had a sign telling people to burn calories and use the stairs instead. This is the prevailing attitude of the entire hotel. It is more of a hostel, or "hostile," than a hotel! One lady who fixes breakfast is nice. Other daytime staff are rude.
When we eventually left our room, we discovered that our safe didn't work. Ms Sunshine, who checked us in, told us she would have the safe fixed and to leave our valuables with her. I put our passports, gold jewelry, and Microsoft Surface in a purse. She complained that we had so much to put in the safe, but made room.
That evening, a nicer man at the desk confessed that no one would fix our safe, and gave us a better room with a working safe. Too bad he couldn't upgrade the rest of the staff, too! What a disaster!
