Learn more about Beamish

Step back in time at Beamish Open Air Museum where costumed guides bring 1900s northern English life to vibrant reality. Nearby Stanley offers charming local pubs and access to the scenic Derwent Walk for peaceful countryside hiking.

This is a great place to visit in the North of England.

It’s like stepping back in time to visit a town, farm, colliery village and old hall and getting to experience what it was like to live in those places from about 1910 onwards. There are staff who take on the roles of various locals that really bring this place to life.

This picture is from the town where you can explore a bank, shops, pub, dentists and lots of other things as well as ride in traditional vehicles of the time. Such a brilliant experience.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Beamish?
The best area to stay when visiting Beamish is in the nearby towns of Chester-le-Street or Durham, as Beamish itself is primarily a museum site without dedicated visitor accommodations.

Chester-le-Street offers convenient access to Beamish, being just a short drive away. This town provides a practical base with a selection of hotels and local amenities, allowing for easy commutes to the museum each day. It's a functional choice for families and solo travelers looking for a straightforward and efficient stay.

Durham, a slightly larger and more historic city, is an excellent option for those looking to combine their Beamish visit with a more extensive exploration of the region. It's home to the impressive Durham Cathedral and Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and offers a wider array of dining and shopping options.
When is the best time to go to Beamish?
The best time to visit Beamish is typically during the spring and summer months (April to September) when the weather is generally pleasant and all outdoor exhibits are fully operational.

During these months, you'll find the widest range of activities available, from the trams and buses running regularly to the various farm animals and outdoor demonstrations being active. The longer daylight hours also allow for more time to explore the extensive open-air museum at a relaxed pace. This period is particularly good for families, as children can enjoy the outdoor play areas and interactive exhibits without concerns about cold weather.

The autumn months (October and November) offer a different experience with fewer crowds and often beautiful fall foliage, though some outdoor activities might be reduced as the weather cools.
