“I am so glad i found the FCI for our first trip to the Outer Banks. We really enjoyed our six night stay there during the last week of October. ![This was one of those on the spur of the moment trips that really leave a few memories behind. This trip transpired during last December, when it was unseasonably warm and Comet Catalina was supposed to be visible in the night sky. I had just been on a long trip to the same location the weekend before and hadn't had much luck with the conditions. So I was in two minds about making the long trip again but I eventually took the call and drove straight off to the coast after work. I arrived too late to catch the sunset that evening but I did manage to catch a sight of Comet Catalina, the Orion Nebula, Andromeda and many other night sky fixtures.

Since it was a last minute trip, I hadn't really made any concrete plans. So rather than drive to a hotel and stay and return in a few hours again for sunrise, I just decided to spend the time at Bodie Island Lighthouse itself. The hood of my car, coupled with a sleeping bag, made for a rather uncomfortable but nonetheless cozy perch to enjoy many hours of star gazing. This wasn't the peak of the Geminid shower but I still caught saw a few bright meteors. Being close to a lighthouse isn't ideal for meteor watching and I wasn't really planning on meteor watching but it was definitely an added bonus.

After several hours of fitful dozing, it was getting close to dawn. I stumbled around groggily, trying to shake the sleep from my mind. It was still pitch dark and although the lighthouse helped with it's friendly light, I couldn't quite see what the sky conditions were like. Nevertheless I setup my camera, composed the shot and just crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. When the light from the sun finally started appearing at the horizon, the entire scene had an almost ethereal quality. The fading light from the lighthouse, Venus and Mars (and Jupiter out of frame) slowly drifting away from sight, the faint traces of the morning mist and the gorgeous sunrise colors at the horizon all contributed to making this a perfect sight.

Just another insanely early morning shot taken at Bodie Island Lighthouse on the North Carolina Outerbanks. The colors were breathtaking - the clouds looked like flames shooting across the sky. This is what inspired the title of the image.

I was at this location recently and for anyone who's looking to visit this location, the timing is ideal for both astrophotography on clear nights and the prospect of great light and clouds because of the springtime storms. Also it's the last chance to enjoy the OBX before the official start of tourist season.

Th final image is a blend of 3 exposures to capture this pretty dynamic scene while preserving details in the sky and enhancing some shadow detail without introducing too much noise.
