Overall, I was very happy with my stay at the Grand Hotel Tien Shan. The staff were generally very friendly and helpful, from the front desk to the spa specialists. The hotel was probably a lot grander in its heyday, and now looks a bit run-down when you look closely, but the feeling is still impressive. My room was spacious and comfortable, but could use a few updates such as a more modern showerhead, with options for mounting it at various heights, and blackout curtains for better sleep. The breakfast buffet was ample and tasty. Gym, pool, and spa area were also excellent, and I only wish I'd taken more time out of my busy sightseeing schedule to enjoy them. The location is also excellent. I would recommend this hotel, though I would encourage a gradual update of the room fixtures and furniture to make it truly excellent.

Staff and breakfasts were excellent. But the rooms and corridors are a bit depressing - hotel rooms need some updating and renovations. It was not what we were hoping to get - the rooms was outdated with old and dark furniture, old carpets, old TV and still bath tub in the room (no modern shower).

Do not stay here. Restricted AC in Summer. Booked a premium room in the warm season. Checked in 3pm and all was good in the room at a nice 21 degrees C. Night time comes and the temperature in the room rockets up to 27 degrees C. When I speak to reception, their response is that they 'turn off the AC cooling supply at night'. When challenged they say its 'summer building policy'. They sent maintenance, who confirmed with me that the cooling tower (water supply) for my level is turned off. Reception then no-longer answered my calls. AC is listed as an in room feature, but not having it available at night for a premium room that is hot as heck is just downright idiotic.
