British trader John Meares named it “Cape Disappointment” in 1788, due to his mistaken belief that the mouth of the Columbia River was only a bay. The United States deemed Cape Disappointment strategically significant enough to base military fortifications there during the Civil War and World War II. Construction of a lighthouse was completed in 1856. (June 2019)

"We loved the huge windows, with the panoramic views of the river and lush hill across the river, so relaxing. Great bike/walk along the river front for coffee and a pastry at Coffee Girl on the pier. Perfectly located on the river downtown Astoria near restaurants, wineries and shops. Great opportunities to hike Ecola State Park trails and across the river in Washington including two light house trails. Host were great, we had ebikes and they came up with a place to store them. "Our five day stay last week was our third annual visit, and we'll be going back again next April. It's a comfortable place! It's warm and bright, with comfy furniture and cozy rooms. It's quiet and feels private, and neighbors are rarely noticed. The main bathroom is roomy and well lit, with a jacuzzi, and the bedroom's windows offer a full view of the beach and the ocean. The views extend far, from both ends of the unit, and the 180' view of the Pacific could not be more grand. "
