During your time in Sorrento take a few moments to unwind amid the peaceful surrounds of Villa Comunale Park. This oasis of green is perched on top of a cliff and offers outstanding views of the Bay of Naples.
Wander around the small park past manicured lawns and flowerbeds that lie beneath the shade of palm trees. Then enjoy an espresso coffee, pastry and scoops of homemade ice cream in the small café.
The park's biggest attractions are the outstanding panoramic views of the sea and the Bay of Naples coastline. Sit on any of the benches and gaze out across the water. From your vantage point, you will be able to see the islands of Ischia and Procida as well as the Mount Vesuvius volcano which destroyed Pompeii in A.D.79. Watch boats and yachts sailing in and out of the harbor beneath your feet.
Next door to the park is the Church and Cloisters of San Francesco. Walk around the ancient cloister, which features a range of architectural styles from different centuries, and tour the 14th-century baroque church. Inside are centuries-old statues and paintings including a 1735 depiction of St. Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata, bleeding wounds that are similar to those of Jesus Christ at his crucifixion.
After your visit, go back to the park and pay a small fee to take an elevator down to Marina Piccola which hosts several private beach clubs. Pick one and rent a beach bed and umbrella. There is also a path that leads down from the cliff to the picturesque marina.
Villa Communale Park is located in the city center, a short walk from Piazza Tasso, the main square. The most direct route on foot will take you past the Santa Maria delle Grazie church complex and close to the 11th-century Basilica di Sant'Antonino. If you plan to drive, there are limited street parking options, but you can pay to park in city center garages.
